One of the most remarkable failures in human cognition that people have is the tendency to assume that isolated incidences are representative of the whole. We all do it, but some of us do it more than others.

For example, suppose a person ("person A") has a series (at least two, but suppose fewer than ten) of negative encounters with another person ("person B"), and that person A always has a negative encounter with person B, to the extent that A and B encounter one another.

However, suppose that every time person A encounters person B, the context in which A and B encounter another is one that is predisposed to adversarial interactions. Would it be any wonder that person A is more likely to have a negative opinion of person B? Hardly, or if you're skeptical, you shouldn't be.

What that means is that if Person A and Person B only encounter one another in instances predisposed to adversarial interactions, it is invariably the case that where a judgment call with respect to qualities that require more than isolated contextual evaluations are going to be... how shall we call it? Incompetent, simply based on that limited and contextual interaction. Suppose person B, in the alternative, makes an evaluation of A's ability to do something or to perform in a certain way that is required in the isolated context in which A and B encounter one another. Well, B's evaluation there is not going to be incompetent because of the fact that more information beyond that context about person A is not required. Assuming B has the requisite knowledge to make the evaluation, B's evaluation is going to be competent, whereas A's judgment is going to not be. Especially where A very likely has insufficient background knowledge to make whatever judgment she did, it is going to be extremely unlikely that she's going to get it right.

But people pull bullsh!t out of thin air all the time... how are we to deal with this?

Be skeptical of people who just toss things like psychological diagnosis of other people around, without laying a proper foundation for it. Be more skeptical of people who seem to "diagnose" people with any variety of things on the basis of their incompetent subjective reaction. If a person makes such a claim (even if the person making that kind of claim is me), you should demand that they justify themselves, or ignore what they're saying. At the very least, you should be conscious of the speaker's/evaluator's motives/intentions with respect to the evaluee.

I say this mainly because the vast majority of people have absolutely no experience in psychology, and even those who do often reach divergent conclusions about the meaning of actions especially where evaluators are not operating with a sufficient command of the facts. A judgment of a person, which you might categorize as a "general" evaluation, cannot be based solely on discrete interactions... but that is exactly what most of us do... and especially where a person's judgment as such is hopelessly wrong, problems of many varieties arise.

That said - I genuinely hope for your sake that this is partially intended as self-reflection ... and that what you seek in writing this is to come to terms with your own mistakes. There is literally no one on this site to whom this thread would more aptly apply than yourself. And as an additional note, it takes far greater maturity and humility to judge oneself openly (not privately), than to judge others and their mistakes from a self-asserted pedestal. Kudos if what you're doing here aligns with the former...shame if it doesn't.

And if your impulse is to disagree with the above point, then I'll just leave this comment here and disengage -- as I really have no interest in having that kind of discussion.

Of course it is, which is why I wrote it. But it's not the only impetus. Our interactions as well caused my writing it. I would encourage you to also consider how it might apply to you.

It concerns me that you "enjoyed" that argument. There was nothing "enjoyable" about it.

It's like part country part island? So the traditional music is like Toby Keith mixed with Bob Marley or something?
