The TM is coming to Wisconsin in a week. Does anyone else run the TM or other events (e.g., Warrior Dash)?

We need special footwear?

No. I wore tennis shoes when I did it in May. Problems I encountered wearing sneakers:

1) The first obstacle was a polar plunge, so for the next ten miles I got to run in sopping wet, 5 lb shoes.

2) Since the soles weren't particularly thin, once the shoe got wet they started rolling out from under me as I was running. There are obviously lots of uneven areas of terrain, and I could tell I was at high risk for an ankle sprain the whole time because it felt like I had platforms under my feet, for lack of a better explanation.

3) There is lots of mud and grit. You have to tie your shoes tight to keep them on, obviously, so what ends up happening is the grit gets into your shoe at the top. You'll be constantly passing people who have stopped to dig out the grit with their fingers, which is pretty futile, and overall it is pretty distracting and uncomfortable.

I was overcome with frustration during the 8th mile and tossed my shoes and socks. I ran the last 3 or 4 miles barefoot, which was pretty fun but very dangerous on my feet - at any time I could have punctured my foot on a random object. I purchased barefoot shoes soon after and have been using those almost exclusively for my running. I plan on using them for the next mudder here in two weeks, and I don't expect to have all the issues I had the first time because they appear to be able to get around all the aforementioned problems. If you have the money to get some I would STRONGLY suggest you do, and if you do, make sure you train with them first because barefoot shoes work your calves very hard and you don't want your first time breaking them in being the Mudder or else you won't be able to walk afterwards.

U mean the shoes with the toes?

Yep. They are one of those things that once you have, you'll never go back.

I did a Rebel Race.. it was fun, but too short.. like 3 miles.

I would like to do a ToughMudder :)
