A good article. To sum, you have big guys running full speed at each other in opposite directions, which is significantly and uniquely more dangerous than other types of plays. Roger Goodell has proposed removing kickoffs and replacing them with a 4th and 15. Instead of kicking off versus onside-kicking it, the choice would be punt or go for the 15 yards. The data seem to suggest this would make it a bit easier to convert than it is currently (13% -> 19%).

If this was to go into effect, would anything ever top this as the biggest change to the NFL ever?

OK first and foremost can she stop treating NFL players like children or expensive China dining sets. Is it dangerous? Absolutely. I assumed that why they were being paid lots of money to play a game. Have we come to the point where we let like 50 NASCAR driver's on a track going 200 mph in a big metal death machine seem less scary than two fully armored men colliding into each other?

Secondly, you're just ruining tradition now. Nothing gets more excited for a game than that kickoff.

Let's just put all the men in lingerie and make them wear flags.

As I alluded to in earlier threads, football can be destroyed by the threat of lawsuit. This move isn't about morality, it's about business. Does that change your tunes at all?

Can you describe said lawsuit and how it would come about?

Its hard to believe that one single action can destroy the NFL. There's too much money that would be lost.

The players seem to be dividing on the issue... this promises to be a very interesting topic going forward. So far Chris Kluwe (K, Vikings) has given strong support while Josh Cribbs (Returner, Browns) has condemned it. All indications so far are that this is probably going to be implemented next year; who will stand up to a coach who has lost a player to paralysis during a kick-off? Who will challenge "player safety?"

It would be a shock and people would be up in arms for maybe 1 season and then it's the norm and nobody cares anymore.

Absolutely retarded IMHO...you afraid to get hurt then go play soccer.....you going to return kicks..and do er like a man then play football...some of the greatest plays of all time have occurred on a kick return
