Sport itself is extremely subjective as a word. If it's competitiveness, then debating is a sport. It's up to the culture norm. tbh.

I agree on that. Much of the "professional wrestling", at least the televised stuff, is just acting.

There is a real form of wrestling.

The term "sport" is, as has been pointed out, fairly subjective. I believe something that requires physical work in a way of being a game is a sport, such as golf, soccer, tennis, and so forth. Video games are not sport, but now they are actually considered to be "e-sport", i.e. electronic sport.

A sport is an athletic competition in which parties to the competition are engaged in rivalrous activities.

(Two golfers can both score birdies on the same hole. How one hits a ball does not affect how the other hits the ball. This is not a sport.

Two tennis players cannot both get the same score on the same set, because how one hits the ball directly influences where the ball is for the other to hit and even whether it's possible to hit it. It is rivalrous, it is a sport.

In teams-- two synchronized swimming teams can both make their formations perfectly synchronized. One of them can't go swimming in the way of the other team. Not a sport.

Two football teams cannot both take the ball to their end zone-- there's one ball, they both want it. You wanna advance it, you gotta get it past tackles, ball strips, if you throw it even interceptions, in order to get there. Sport).
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.

Let's make it a little more subjective...

A good rule of thumb is that a sport is any physical competition where fat people can't be competitive and where results do not depend on any form of judging (ie. diving, figure skating etc..)

Unfortunately the 'fat people' part tends to exclude football to some degree, which is generally the only exception that I make to the rule :P

This is the general ruling I go by: if it's in the Olympics then most likely it's a sport. Of course there's some things that are excluded from the Olympics that people would argue should be included...

No.

Though many track events could be easily adapted into sports. Trip/stiff arm opposing sprinters, or throw the javelin/shot put at EACH OTHER...

I didn't say safe sports :)

Figure skating.

That's not a sport. Figure skating is just ballroom dancing on ice.

They should kick figure skating out the Winter Olympics and replace it with rally car races on frozen lakes or something else that's actually worth watching.

fair enough. But then in that case all you did is flat out disagree with me without providing any reason, which isn't very helpful.

(This form of logic and your view in the democracy thread make me question you. Come on your smarter than that!)

I could say the same about you.

Unless you also consider darts to be a sport.. and bowling, pool, and beer pong.

Well, why are they not a sport?

Because I distinguish between sports and miscellaneous competitions. To me, a sport requires a physical exertion with a clear, objective goal. ie.) any competition where results hinge on the subjective decision of a judge gets ruled out.

Furthermore, along the lines that R_R has stated, a sport must provide the opportunity to also impede your opponent and not just "do your own thing". This is what rules out things like golf, bowling, darts, and so on..

That comment i made earlier about fat people was more-so aimed at humour and my general smugness towards them than an actual qualitative definition of what a sport is.
