You ever noticed how many sports debates are started, but never accepted? If those people just debated each other it would work, but they don't. I think it's stupid.

The problem is, people care about different teams. So if there's a debate "Team X is better than Team Y", only a very small audience, the fans of teams X and Y, will probably want to take up the debate.

Also, I don't think we've had one expire yet, so I guess they still get accepted.
Though one I was in almost went unaccepted, and I guess it was a sports debate in a way.

Though I have to say, I really don't like most sports debates.

I think it's due to the fact that the majority of the users here don't understand sports enough to debate them. Well, at least that's what it is for me.

First of all, sports are excellent. Don't hate cuz you got picked last in gym class.

Second, sports debates are kind of dumb because people don't judge them properly. I can say that the Buffalo Bills are better than the Dallas Cowboys (which is absolutely not true) and people might vote one way or another depending on their particular opinion or team preference. While this is true of any debate, in debating sports people often forget to think creatively or strategize about dismantling their opponent's arguments. Instead they focus strictly on building their own case. It's just a very boring debate topic in general, usually.

When they debate on who is better it is very boring. There are a few interesting topics though. For instance, the issue of salary caps is fairly interesting (if you have any interest in sports, of course).

That's true. You can approach that one from a CBA. But if the debate is about, say, what better is better in the clutch or what have you, people are just going to debate/vote based on preference. I think it'd be interesting though to use facts (stats) and argue against them. For instance, statistically Kobe Bryant is a better basketball player than, say, LaBron James. But it'd be interesting for someone to make the argument that for various reasons James is the better player. Hmm.

I do agree. Maybe times sports debates are started and at the last second one of the debaters changes their mind and quits.

I myself would much prefer to debate or discuss a given topic in the open form. That is, by simply posting back and forth on the thread, instead of engaging in the very restricted debate format. I find that too limited. (Only 3 posts?)

Also, they are largely useless, as well as possessing no real and objective measure of one's rhetorical skills. Since usually only a few people vote on them, and those folks often comprise the friends of one of the participants.

I'd tend to agree with the basic premise. However, it's also noteworthy to point out that sports debates are almost exclusively statistic based.

For example, let's say the resolution is as follows: Michael Jordan is better than LeBron James.

While their can be arguments of a diluted league and such, this primarily boils down to stats. This makes the resolution weighted, and thus unfair. This is a challenge I have faced when considering accepting or even creating sports debates.

However, this challenge also gives the opportunity to show skill, and dig for arguments that aren't necessarily obvious or predictable.
