hey sports fans!

I am a huge NBA fan. It is my favorite pro sport to watch--especially in person--and favorite team sport to play.

I used to say the NFL was my favorite but the "No Fun League" has become exactly that over the years, with all those rule changes prohibiting good old-fashioned hitting. Plus it has become too much of a business, I think. And way too much downtime between plays.

(I once read that in an average NFL game there is only about 15 minutes of action. That is, if you added up all the time of the real plays that are run.)

Anyway..I am of the belief that the best overall athletes in sports are the NBA guys. Best combo of speed, strength, and agility.

And probably would put NHL second.

What say you??

thanks for your time.

As far as an overall athlete, yeah, basketball is definitely the most athletic. Each sport requires different athletic traits but basketball is the one that requires all of them. Football needs strength and size, baseball needs strength, soccer needs endurance. And yes, I would also put hockey as #2 because it also requires all around athleticism.

A good argument can indeed be made for hockey. Especially if by "best athletes" you mean the most versatile, and best at a variety of sports other than their specialties.

I have seen some NBA guys trying other sports. And, your rare exceptions like MJ aside, it usually ain't too pretty.

I think NHL guys would be far better hoops players, and also baseball and football, than would the NBA cats.

But if you could use a sub-category in my OP question to vote on, I might throw in "NFL defensive backs & WR's" as a possible group for best all-around athletes.

I would say football by far. Just look at the records.

NFL-
Highest Vertical- Randy Moss- 51"
Fastest 40 Time- Bo Jackson- 4.12
Longest Standing Long Jump- Byron Jones- 12'3" (world record)
Heaviest Bench Press- Larry Allen- 700 lbs (pretty sure)
Most Bench Press Reps- Justin Ernest- 51 reps of 225 lbs

I don't think any other sport can compare to this.

Professional fighters in non-heavyweight classes are typically pretty incredible athletes. I don't know if they'd be the best, but I'd argue that they'd be up there in the running.

Not really. Boxing is an upper body sport mostly.

You punch until you are punch drunk and then the other guy beats the crap out of you like Cassius Muhammad Ali Clay always used to do.

Was it an amateur game? They have *far* more fights than professional games.

And if your theory is so great, how many fights do you think the Canucks got into in an 82 game season?

Practically every fast break down the ice is a brawl.

That's what I am trying to tell you -- hockey is just one long brawl.

And the skates do all the work for you -- you are not really running.

I disagree. Boxers are constantly moving. And they need to keep their wind after being slamming in the ribs a dozen times. But I'm not just talking about professional boxers. I'm including MMA fighters as well.

And notice that I specified non-heavy weight classes. Heavyweight fighters have a tendency to be like you described.

It may look easy, but if you ever played hockey, it would kick your a$$. Not as simple as fighting on ice skates.
