A variety, playmaking ability, dribbling, shooting, vision, passing, etc. Combine those, and you'll have my list.

Lol. You need to stray further than the USMNT to find fantastic footballers.

Ronaldinho has no right to be at #5. He's simply a street ball dribbler. Best and Cruyff are far better... especially considering you have CR7 at 7th makes your list wrong. ;)

Nah, I just have quite a few issues with this list.

Ahem...I think you missed someone.

And in terms of other modern talent, I think Toni Kroos is really one of the best players I've seen. But because he's not a striker (and doesn't command any attention) he often goes unnoticed.

Socrates was better than Zico, hands down. CR7 and Zidane were fantastic players, and so was Pele... but Pele played before the offsides rule... how many goals could modern players score were there no offside rules?

No. If we were to add Toni Kroos... we'd have to add Ramos, Neymar, and a host of others who are way better than him. Ramos isn't a striker and is a big name. Kroos doesn't even compare to the names on this list.

The classic an erred modern conception of Messi... it's an egregious fever. Messi hasn't proved himself to be the best... he plays for a stacked team, doesn't perform at a great level in the World Cup... I could go on. Also, the fact that Zidane is 7th is appalling. The latter 3 on this list are acceptable, though I'd rank it a little differently, but 1-7 are very skewed and twisted.

Thanks for making a list of your own! :)

Messi has scored a ridiculous number of career goals. He has also made a ridiculous number of assists. It's true he offers nothing in defence but in an attacking sense he is an incredible player. His ability to dribble is unmatched, his crossing and passing ability by far the best of all time and his ability to finish and score goals is only comparable with Ronaldo, Pele and gerd Muller. The cv he holds is very impressive. Numerous champions league and la liga wins and many other minor tournaments. He only narrowly missed out on the world cup last year remember? He has been better for Barcelona then Argentina in big games though. Consider this though, as he moved to barca aged 13 he would have qualified to play for Spain by the age of 20. Imagine if he chose his adopted country instead of his homeland? His international record would look a lot better. Ultimately in international football you can often be limited by your team.

I understand, but that doesn't put him above the likes of CR7 (more goals) or other players (Zidane, Pele, Maradona, etc)

It's true he offers nothing in defence but in an attacking sense he is an incredible player.

I don't dispute that he's a great player. But defensively (as you mentioned) he's not that great. Besides, there are other players who've demonstrated superior skill to him.

His ability to dribble is unmatched, his crossing and passing ability by far the best of all time

Oh, please. Ronaldihno for dribbling... Passing? No way. Xavi is better by a landslide, he had 100% completion in one game. Cruyff and Platini was way better at passing as well.

and his ability to finish and score goals is only comparable with Ronaldo, Pele and gerd Muller.

Maradona was excellent as well, and Ronaldo is probably better.

The cv he holds is very impressive. Numerous champions league and la liga wins and many other minor tournaments. He only narrowly missed out on the world cup last year remember?

He's done well, I agree to that. However, it's also true that Messi has played for a stacked team his ENTIRE career.

He has been better for Barcelona then Argentina in big games though.

That's obvious, Barcelona is the best team there is. It's stacked.

Consider this though, as he moved to barca aged 13 he would have qualified to play for Spain by the age of 20. Imagine if he chose his adopted country instead of his homeland? His international record would look a lot better.

Probably so, his addition would be incomparable to any other team.

Ultimately in international football you can often be limited by your team.

While true, you can be equally enhanced by your team. I want to see how he plays on a team with limited skill. I want to see HIS skill, not his teammates skills with him. If this happens, he'll be a top 3. If not, he'll likely never get a crack at that spot.

As an individual, though, he's one of the nicest players in the game, and for that, I respect him. :)

The actual order.

Indeed, this is quite flawed. The mere implication that Robben supercedes Messi or Maradona (specifically) is abhorrent. Robben isn't even the best of his time. Ronaldo is ranked well and so is Pele (though Maradona is regretfully absent). Koeman? Maldini? The two simply don't belong. Maradona gets flack as being a "cheater" for one goal. That doesn't necessitate his absence from the #1 spot, considering his noteworthy skill.

1. Pele
2. Zinedine Zidane
3. Cristiano Ronaldo
4. Arjen Robben
5. Lionel Messi
6. George Best
7. Johan Cruyff
8. Paolo Maldini
9. Diego Maradona (you overrated him)
10. Ronald Koeman

Okay, I come from the UK so I can admit that I MAY have underrated Maradona slightly (but he definitely isn't top). It is a known fact that EA have been overrating Messi (and Ronaldo). Arjen Robben is just as pacey as Robben and even EA (who are bias) admit this. Robben has better spin on the ball and has way better goals. Maldini and Koeman is at the bottom of the list and is an epic free kick and penalty taker (possibly the best in history of football)!

Underrated, definitely. Top, probably, but I'll agree it's disputable. However, Pele doesn't deserve the #1 slot either. As I mentioned previously, he played before the offsides rule. How many goals could modern players score if there were no offsides?

Yes, agreed.

Arjen Robben is just as pacey as Robben and even EA (who are bias) admit this. Robben has better spin on the ball and has way better goals.

Robben is good, but not nearly good enough to be Top 10 all time.

Maldini and Koeman is at the bottom of the list and is an epic free kick and penalty taker (possibly the best in history of football)!

Good, yes. Deserving for that one skill a spot on the top 10? No.

Impressive.

Yes, agreed.

That is why Arjen Robben is better than Messi and disputably Ronaldo too.

If Robben doesn't deserve it, then neither do Messi or Ronaldo.

Maldini and Koeman is at the bottom of the list and is an epic free kick and penalty taker (possibly the best in history of football)!

Maybe not Maldini but definitely Koeman. Have you ever seen a free kick / penalty by him?

Impressive.

Admit that Robben deserves the spot yet?

No, not necessarily. EA's rankings have nothing to do with measuring talent. EA's rankings aren't the metric by which this forum is measured. Skill, regardless of the ranking EA places on players is the measure for this. It's insanity to think Robben is better than Messi OR Ronaldo. Look at the stats, not just the potential. Regardless, EA's rankings, though they may overrate Messi and Ronaldo some, doesn't mean they shouldn't be rated high.

This is very false. Messi and Ronaldo have demonstrated superior skill throughout their career thus far. Potential vs Reality dictates entirely different ends of the spectrum.

Maldini and Koeman is at the bottom of the list and is an epic free kick and penalty taker (possibly the best in history of football)!

Maybe not Maldini but definitely Koeman. Have you ever seen a free kick / penalty by him?

Yes, I have! He's fantastic! That one particular skill doesn't merit him a spot in the top 10 over all football stars. Messi is a fantastic free/penalty kicker as well, but has additional advanced skills which boost him to a higher level.

No. Perhaps later on, but as for now, he's not deserving of a top 10 all-time spot. You've attacked Messi and Ronaldo, but completely ignored players from the past.
