(seventh topic ever; first in this particular board)

Indeed, I predict this will be the least used forum.

I mean, what's the point to sports?

A lot of people get through school because they can play football, then they struggle reading at a 4th grade level. Sad really.

Sports are played because our bodies require physical activity. We no longer have to hunt and forage for our food so instead we play sports and/or exercise to reach the sufficient activity levels our bodies require to sustain themselves. Perhaps as we continue to evolve as a race our need for physical release will become obsolete. Examples of races that no longer need to compete in sports are extremely prevalent in today's science fiction. Just look at the Asgard of the Stargate series or an energy base life form.

However, even though sports and/or athletic activity may become obsolete there isn't the guarantee that we will stop playing them. Sports offer entertainment and excitement that can't be found elsewhere.

I will admit sports are good for one thing, social events. In high school if you can't play in a sport, it does good for your reputation if you go to the school games.

Sports offer an alternative to tribes running at each other with pointed objects - with less than favourable intent. :P

I love people that say "they don't get sports", always comes from people who are not good at them. Is there really anything wrong if someone guinely enjoys the competition and likes to strive for excellence in their sport? Its ok if you personally don't care for sports but you have to be a little open minded and be able to realize why someone might enjoy them.

People find them entertaining. Not all entertainment is intellectual.
Ask yourself...
Did you not enjoy karate?

Yes. But as a child who didn't know any better.

That's why, when I turned twelve, I quit.

sports allow us to exercise our innate xenophobia in modern civilization. I look forward to the day we can do away all our xenophobic tendencies.

Sports are a way to stop thinking about the problems in your life and just have fun. I'm personally not very good at sports but they are fun and keep my mind off dumb problems I don't need to worry about.
also there is a feeling of self accomplishment when you start getting better at them and notice that you don't suck so bad. it gets people's confidence up.
AND THERE IS NOTHING LIKE BEATING YOUR OPPONENT TO A PULP!!!

I love to watch football, actually I watched some today and I loved it
I played baseball for most of my life until I got into High shcool and then I joined the Debate team so that took up most of my life.

Xenophobia? It exercises aggression, but when I watch sports, xenophobia is the last thing I feel... Usain Bolt does not arouse fear in me when he runs really fast for example :D
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.

Isn't debate a sport?

In it's loosest definitions sure. Most people, though, would class debate in the same ranking as competitive cup stacking.

"I mean, what's the point to sports?"

Like Nate said - sports offer a fun (to some) and unique way to exercise and be physical which is necessary for human survival, though I think the most obvious answer is simply a matter of preference. Consider Athens vs. Sparta. Even today, some people simply favor physical prowess over intellectual stimulation. Both have perks.

They should bring back the coliseum I say. Build a big Pantheon, get beggars to fight in them, every one is a winner.

In 4th grade we were required to do competitive cup stacking in the P.E. curriculum. it was a hand-eye coordination "sport" I guess they called it.. lol

Sports are where you legally are given the opportunity to pwn weaklings.

Sounds criminal.

A society without sports would naturally create sports so that there would be a way to pwn weaklings.

Shouldn't the Sports forum merge with the society forum?

True. Very astute of you.

I think the society forum might be a little overwhelmed, as it is quite popular. However, the sports forum isn't very large on this website so... sure.
