I just got a Lenovo W520 for school. From what I've read, it will do everything I need and more as far as school work goes and will last a while.

What I am wondering is whether or not it can handle gaming. And specifically Starcraft 2.

Anybody have a clue?

I haven't had a laptop before this, so I don't have a comparison, but I haven't had any issues with excessive heat. I've been able to keep it in my lap for extended periods of time with no discomfort.

Wow, everyone's getting laptops 'cept us. Stupid california budget.

NC didn't provide it; I had to purchase it myself for college. However, I can apply to have it put on my financial aid.

Oh, and thanks Ore_Ele.

What is "extended periods of time" to you (12 hours? 1 hour?).

Also, something to remember with laptops that is different from towers, you need to turn the laptop off at the end of the night, you can't leave it running for ever (my wife fried her netbook's motherboard in a year doing that).

Fricking waste of money. You can't do anything with an ipad.

I haven't done any gaming on it yet, so the longest I've used it in one sitting is maybe 3 hours.

I agree with u Rocky.

The laptop is good but next time consider this...

1. Laptop is freaking expensive cause of its mobility I don't recommend buying one for games... Cause laptop with graphic cards are super expensive..
super easy to damage even break....
Like the one 1,299.00 even with the discount.
2. You could have built a gaming commuter for $800 with a lot of gadgets and
you could have bought a cheap laptop if you wanted to and just carry that...
cause to do hw unless ur into graphic arts or something complicated, all u need is a good computer that can work.

But since you bought it I believe that can do more then gaming for serious.

I wouldn't want a laptop from school. Wastes taxpayer money with little to no benefits.

I love the laptop, but I wish I had done that. I was just rushed with the start of school to get something, so I went with what NC State recommended for engineering students.

You probably won't notice it getting hot until it starts getting old (as parts wear down, they get hotter to maintain efficiency). You'll eventually want to get one of those little laptop cooling trays. They sit a few inches off the top of the table and have another fan to circulate air and cool them.

I've been doing that.

Charging it over night won't cause that kind of harm, right?

Shouldn't, pretty much all batteries are now designed that when they are fully charged, they stop charging (as to not overcharge and damage the battery). They do this via a two cycle system.

I rarely even unplug my laptop (though that is because after 7 years on the same battery, it has about a 40 minute life, lol).
