Hey guys! I'm looking for a nice laptop to replace my hunkofjunk. It would be awesome if you guys could help me find nice deals?

I have my eye on this guy:
http://www.newegg.com...

And this guy:
http://www.newegg.com...

I'm looking to spend around $1200, maybe up to $1500 depending on how super awesome the specs are. The above two show what I'm looking for.

Processor, video card, RAM are top priority. Everything else is just icing really. Only looking for new laptops, no used or self constructed.

You guys are awesome!

$300 off on any of those, makes for some pretty good deals.
Two of them are 18.4" screens, so that could make for poor portability if you need to bring it anywhere.
The 15.4" one is reasonably sized and actually has the best specs of the three (I think it uses DDR2 instead of DDR3 RAM, but the performance difference is negligible). It is a bit more expensive, especially compared to the fairly cheap $999 one.

There's also http://www.newegg.com...
The video card's only got 512MiB of RAM compared to the others at 1GiB, but a 9800M GS is a bit faster than a 9650M GT. You probably won't need 1GiB of VRAM anyway.

Just get something with a very high CPU, everything else is secondary, I would also advise a blu-ray drive, longevity in consideration, also high RAM, and a sweet graphics card wouldnt go amiss, oh yeah and get a nice motherboard as well, and might as well put a sound card in as well, a physics card is basically technilogical pornography....put it in! and what the heck upgrade to a 17 inch screen, make it high def since youve got a blue ray drive.

ahhhh actually just get a mac.

1. Blu-ray is useless
2. Longevity isn't an issue because I'm only buying a laptop for around 1k
3. Lots of RAM is always good, same with a video card
4. WTF? Motherboard? For a laptop? Are you on crack o.o?
5. Sound card for a laptop isn't that important, I have nice speakers
6. Physics card? Dedicated 1G video card is overkill already, I don't need that crap.
7. 17 inches is a bit much for a laptop. Just makes it heavier and annoying.

And there's no way in hell I'm getting a mac. Wouldn't know how to work one if I tried.

You should sleep on it Kleptin.

Personally a new laptop should fit your needs.

Are you gaming?
How much time do you spend on it
Is mobility an issue (battery life)
How fast do you need it (multiple tasks vs 1 task)
Budget
What are the primary uses of the machine.

If you answer the following I probably can find a nice alternative that may be cheaper.

No no no...

http://www.newegg.com...

That one.

Check it out - for $200 more you get:

2.4 ghz processor instead of 2.0
7200 RPM HDD instead of 5400
3mb cache instead of 2mb

You sacrifice less than a half inch screen size and like 4 oz of weight. The pairing of the T series processor and the 120M video card doesn't even make sense. First of all, the hard drive and processor wouldn't be able to keep up with a next-gen NVIDIA card... Second of all, the lower numbered next gen grafix cards don't match up to the old ones. I've got an 8800, and that will beat a 9650. You have to get up into the mid 200's on the next gen cards before you see a good performance increase.

The extra boost on the processor speed, paired with the P series instead of T series will make everything run faster. Bigger cache, faster FSB, better steppings...

And the 7200 RPM hard drive seals the deal. You WILL NOT get good performance out of a 5400 RPM drive if you plan to do any sort of drive-intensive activity. Like gaming. Or loading Windows.

Put it this way. A T series processor, no matter the speed, and a 5400 RPM drive... either one would be a deal breaker for me.

1. Blu ray is not useless, I use mine all the time.
2. Fair enough, I wasnt so sure how big your budget was.
3. Yes, I know, Thats what I said.
4. Wow, e penis points for using that cliche statement
5. Personal preference, but to take full advantage of nice speakers, a sound card is a neccesity.
5. Its not crap, its just unnesesary.
6. Realy? Personally I dont like watching movies on small screens, and its not annoying, trust me Im using a 17ich now.

I dont know why you guys are all getting arsy at me.

I'll give it a guess.
A very high CPU, everything else is secondary
If the performance he needs is largely for gaming, a good videocard is at least as important as a fast CPU.

Blu-ray drive
Still a waste of money for most people, except maybe in a Home Theater PC.

A nice motherboard as well
This is a laptop. Manufacturers don't even tell you what motherboard they use in their laptops. Not that it matters anyway - it's not like you'll need something that can handle heavy overclocking for a laptop.

Physics card
First, dedicated physics cards are completely outdated compared to the physics processing of GPUs.
Second, I'm fairly certain you can't even get a physics card for a laptop.

I really was going to go with the one you recommended, but I just realized that I'm harder on cash than I thought I was >.>

My boss cut my hours and I need a hefty amount of cash for summer activities. The videocard was overkill to begin with. As for gaming, I'm not really going to use it for gaming :) I just used it as a benchmark for suitable speed and multitasking capability. I won't have time to play videogames for the next 2-3 years XD I'm probably going to ditch this laptop in 2 years or so, so spending the extra $200 wouldn't have been a good idea, especially when I need the cash *now*.

You're completely right on all points though, tarzan.

1. Bluray isn't very suitable for me because I watch more bootleg chinese dramas than anything else
2. Yeah, money's tight >.>
3. And yes, I was agreeing with you XD
4. Well there's a reason why it's cliche o.o I'm using this laptop for the short term, no more than 2 years-ish, I'd say, and for nothing hardcore. I'd only be interested in a better motherboard if I had the intent on upgrading but since it's a laptop and I don't, don't care about the motherboard.
5. Haha, by "nice speakers" I mean "are loud enough". Really, if I wanted an entertainment system, I'd buy something else. As I said, this isn't for media.
6. I personally think it's a scam. A dedicated video card is good enough for graphics. They don't have to parcel out the work to yet another card.
7. I'm always right up to my computer anyway, so it all looks bigger :P If anything, I'll just watch movies on a television instead.

Oh god... I forgot this thread...

Here's my top budget picks:

ASUS G50Vt-B1 ($1700)
Sony FWN-373J/B ($1200)
HP dv7-1270us ($1200)
HP dv5-1250us ($750)
ASUS N50Vn-D1 ($1200)
ASUS N70SV-X1 ($1400)
ASUS F50SV-A1 ($1000)
ASUS EPC1000HE ($385) - note this is a baby lappy - no good for gaming.

And if you have a sudden windfall of cash. DO NOT GET A MACBOOK. Get an ASUS G71G-Q2 instead - it's got a quad core processor, better graphics, more & faster memory, more & faster hard drive space, and much better hardware than the 17 inch macbook pro. Oh... and it's $250 cheaper.
