I torrent music and films using a program called Vuze and was wondering whether or torrenting is completely legal as my tech-savvy friend has told me other wise. So I just wanted to know if anyone else knew if it was or not.

1) uTorrent is the only acceptable torrent client.

2) Unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material in the United States is illegal as far as I know, no matter the method used.

Nope. Well, Usenet itself is not illegal same as Torrenting. It's what you download that makes it legal/illegal. With Usenet the odds of getting "caught" are significantly less.

With torrents your IP address is open to anyone to see if they are a peer on the torrent. With Usenet the police would have to subpoena private records from the server host. The authorities will go after the easiest targets long before they mess with the more difficult to get people.

I use a so-so IP blocker, but I manually moved mine to look like I'm in Togo. 90% of the time, if you tried to track me down, you could, but when I'm in my room, I have to get internet by tethering my iPhone to my computer because the wifi doesn't make it there and I'm too lazy to do anything about it. Much easier to move where your IP address appears on an iPhone than you would think.

I'd like to point out the same is true of Torrenting. I know a lot of independent artists and open source software that is legitimately obtainable through BitTorrent, and I think it is a great idea. If you want to share something you created over the Internet, it is rather expensive to pay for the bandwidth for everyone to download from you directly, BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer networks greatly lower the cost because anyone who downloads the legitimately acquired work will help distribute it to others, instead of all downloads coming from the server.
