My goal here is to get a decent discussion going in technology for once. Every single person on the internet should be interested in this topic, so here we go (also I submitted this for the "Opinions" section ages ago and it doesn't seem to have been added.)

For those who don't know, here are the basics:
What is it? http://en.wikipedia.org...
Argument for the positive: http://www.google.com...
Argument for the negative: http://dontbubble.us...

Websites which track their users (GOOGLE!!!) use certain algorithms to try and predict what kind of result you're looking for. That's why you (a left wing democrat) and your friend (a right wing theocrat) will almost certainly get a different list of results if you search for "Obama" (assuming you both have been using Google for a while of course.)

I almost always want the wikipedia result for things I search for on Google, followed by other informative sites. That's why almost ANYTHING I search for on Google will come back with a range of dictionary sites, wikis, blogs and so on. I think this is a stupidly useful thing. Google 'knows' me. If I want to find propaganda sites or something out of left field I don't normally search for, I have to get a bit more diverse or specific with my search (also known as using my Google-fu). Not a problem.

So, I like Filter Bubbling. Websites like DuckDuckGo have a place I guess and I've added it to my favourites but yeah... All hail Google!

Why on earth would you want a corporation to store information regarding your private searches? It takes no extra effort to go to Wikipedia and search for the material that you need.

What "private searches"?

What are you afraid of exactly?

Eh, I clear my cookies often to avoid this kind of thing. I like my searches to be directly searching, not picking and choosing things.

I like filter bubbling. It boosts the results I'd be most likely to pick to the top, to save me the trouble of narrowing my search down ridiculously.

If I search for "John 6", I'm probably not looking for carm.org trying to refute Transubstantiation, but catholic.com defending it. If I really want an atypical result, it's not hard to modify the search accordingly.

Because they use the stored information in a way that I find beneficial.

Cookies are irrelevant. Google stores the information on their server.

Do they? I thought Google checks what cookies you have.

Search engines like Google and Bing tracking your information is actually pretty useful.
