will humnans ever create a colony on another planet? having said that do you think humnans will ever get to the point where we colonize another solar system?

I am a big fan of the idea to someday terraform mars, but thats not very realistic according to some and there are not that many other places that would seem viable.

We will only colonise if there is any value to do so. If you grow corn on mars then we will settle there. If we can mine unobtanium from venus we build mining colonies there. Something like the moon would only ever be home for scientific stations, penal colonies, refueling stations, maybe even a casino if someone is feeling crazy... but not a true colony.

As for other solar systems... can we ever get there?
I am voting for Innomen because of his intelligence, common sense, humility and the fact that Juggle appears to listen to him. Any other Presidential style would have a large sub-section of the site up in arms. If I was President I would destroy the site though elitism, others would let it run riot. Innomen represents a middle way that works, neither draconian nor anarchic and that is the only way things can work. Plus he does it all without ego trips.

I dunno man, I think I'm gonna need to know what these hum-nans are. It's not a common sight to see people misspell the same word twice....

Will humans ever do it? Hopefully. It definitely ain't gonna be doing it for a long while though.
The current world-social structure must collapse first.
That, or we come under extraterrestrial attack.

other solar systems are rather far away... I think it's more likely we all die first.

We are already in the process of colonizing Mars. We have projects being worked on, preparing for this. For example, people have built a dome designed for Mars and has them living in it for years.

we'd need a major energy revolution to colonize other star systems.... if its gonna happen it will be long after we're all dead.

or they could just send a normal ship with families, have entire generations live out their lives on the ship, and hope it eventually reaches somewhere habitable. doubt anyone would volunteer for that one though :P
evidently i only come to ddo to avoid doing homework...

We can neither allow things to get worse.

There is only so much charity, support and understanding we can give such backwards people. If they want to squat in the dirt and shell each others schools we can't do anything for them.

Another planet? Maybe; the moons in the solar system, however, are a much more likely candidate for colonization.

If a planet was chosen, it would be Mars. Mercury is much to close to the Sun, Venus' atmosphere wouldn't allow us to get to the surface and the others are gas giants - completely out of the question.

Another solar system? Not in our lifetimes for sure.

I am glad that my grandson will pilot that ship but forget to fuel the tank- the fate of mankind is in his hands. But he will know that the star ship actually travels with the help of the solar panel- Thus, mankind is saved again.

Thanks to my Grandson

Yes we will, but it is likely going to be a religious group that does it. One that feels persecuted by the current world and laughed at and called "extremists wackos." They'll raise a bunch of money and do it (note, this will likely be long after we already colonize space and other planets first).
