Something that scans an object and relays a description of its complete nature. For example scanning an apple tree with this device will identify what kind of tree it is, when it's expected to bear fruit, the average lifespan, where they're found, etc,.

Basically like an automated and comprehensive Google search of what the thing is that you're scanning. Having auditory feedback would be cool too.

That kind of technology is a long ways away from us
Epsilon: There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith.

The way I see it, it needs to be able to model based on the leaf, or some defining feature. It would be more of a Wikipedia article made by a novice during the first twenty minutes of its existence. At this point, it would pretty much be a camera with useful notes attached.

We are almost there!

Even today, you could go outside and snap a pic of a tree with your iPhone or Smart Phone. Then go to "Tin Eye" and past the image in their Search box. You will then get hits of those trees. Telling you what type it is. And with those hits are links, like maybe Wikipedia, that will tell you all you need to know about it, including maturation and fruit/blossom bearing time of the year.

Medical Scanners, damn near like the ones you used to see on Star Trek, are already here. Sort of. We have some proto-types here at the VA, over in Nuclear Medicine. I do not believe they are available to the general public as of yet, however.

Here's a link talkin' abut that Medical Scanner I mentioned in my OP. Ours are similar, at least the ones I have seen, but I believe they are made by a company called "Ima-Gen" or something like that.
