The internet is a blight. It is making children delirious. People die and suicide because of the internet daily. Nowadays, it's quite easy to look up a tutorial on how to kill yourself successfully, via the help of the World-Wide-Web.

It's filled with trolls, they make fun of people, take away their pride and leave them in the cold. And it's growing worse, daily.

Porn is poisoning the minds of our children.

Don't let me even get started on the Deep Web, the place where pedophiles love to hang out, alongside drug dealers, terrorists and hackers.

Danger is real, guys.

Well...I am thinking that you are likely a Troll. So I am reticent on spending the time to even address your diatribe. But what the hell: I am on a long break during a slow day at work. So I'll bite. LOL

There is no question that there is a megaton of garbage on the internet. But there is also a lot of good. A lot of education can be gleaned. Social networking. Communication. (which is ALWAYS a good thing, mind you.)

Do you know that many social scientists are of the belief that the World Wide Web was a primary factor in the dissolution of the Soviet Union? And is also a motivating factor in the freedom movement of other oppressed countries? Like China? And some parts of the Middle East?

Because one vital and indispensable ingredient in any Totalitarian Regime is denial of outside communication among their masses. That is, the people. Just ask Hitler. Or Mao. Or Pot. Or Stalin.

Funny thing, too: all that negative stuff you said in your OP about the Net. DO you know that most of it was also said about ALL new forms of communication throughout the history of Man? Yep: books; TV; Radio; film. ANY new communication or Freedom Tool always draws criticism. Especially at first.

Information is always a double=edged sword. As far as kids on the Net getting the bad stuff. Where are the parents? The supervision? The breakdown of the traditional nuclear family is a far worse danger to children today than the Internet is. Morality begins at home. And instilling that is NOT the job or even the responsibility of the Web.

It is but a tool. To be used or not. For good or bad. The good and useful DOES far outweigh the negative on the Internet, I believe. But there are many many otherwise useful tools and aspects of society that can be abused. Giuns; cars; booze; medication; Television. What have you.

It's all about personal responsibility and integrity. The Net only brings easier access to the good and bad that already permeate society.

Any sort of Information that can improve our lives is an asset. Do not make the mistake of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

The danger IS real! You are right about that.

That is: the Danger of Ignorance that wishes to deprive well-meaning citizens of accessing a useful tool.

I'm going to go ahead and call you out on all of this.

Pornography is poisoning the minds of our children? Isn't it the responsibility of the parents of said children to make sure that these children wouldn't have access to such materials anyways? Parents can simply make use of the parental control feature that can be found on most electronic devices that connect to the internet or parents can simply not give their kids devices and instead hand them a book or something else.

Trolls, who just as easily can walk into multiple parts of the internet and spread misfortune, can almost just as easily on most sites be dealt with, be it muting or action by moderators.

Pedophiles, drug dealers, and hackers huh? As the years go by, people are being made increasingly aware of the dangers of the internet and the potential threat that the internet can cause to the lives of people. As a result, I believe the threat of these three things you just listed is diminished exponentially as time goes by.

Anything else?

Figured he was a troll and did not have the balls or intelligence to rebut my post.

In fact...looking back on my OP, and not to get callouses patting myself on the back--I believe it to be a damn-near perfect defense of the Internet. Or any new communication technology. Or social networking technology as well.

Can anyone--even if you don't not really agree with the troll OP in this thread, and have to simply play Devil's Advocate--effectively rebuff my OP post to the Troll? Where I defended as a mere tool?

I would be happy to entertain any debates on it. Just for fun. Thanks!

"The internet shalt be shutdown." Yep and pretty much everything that relies on it. 1 large solar flare or a strategically detonated EMP will wipe it all out over night. Isn't a matter of if but when. All your micro circuitry tech will be rendered useless. Pretty much the end of civilization AS WE KNOW IT.
It's not your views that divide us, it's what you think my views should be that divides us.

The Internet is just a tool that we use, like a car or a screwdriver. If you use the car to get from point A to point B, great, no harm done. If you use the screwdriver to tighten and loosen screws, great, no harm done. If you use your car to mow people down, that's a flagrant misuse. Ditto with stabbing someone to death with the screwdriver.

My point is, don't blame technology and objects for people's misuse of them.
