Not a problem, there have been quite a few threads on this in the past, but I think that debate would be the single best source for what ELO is.

Question about ELO: Does the system take into account when the debate took place? In other words, if I beat someone who is 0-0, then that person wins 10 straight debates, will the amount of points I get for that victory increase (factoring that I beat someone who is 10-1) or does it only take into account their record when I beat them(0-0)?

It looks at the ELO score of two people at the time of the start of the debate. If it was ever changing, it runs a high risk of a crash. Since circular ELO scores will happen (if my score changes, it changes the score of everyone I've debated, which will change the score of everyone those people have debated, which may come back to change my score again, and the cycle repeats).

Also, a forever updating ELO would be assuming that everyone is constant and ELO is merely trying to find out that constant. But some people will get better with time, so those that debated them when they were still young and inexperienced shouldn't get an ELO bonus because of it.

Actually, the best explanation is because the coding would be countlessly more challenging. I just rationalized it. :P

What if your opponent's account was disactivated when you won the debate?

How long did it actually take you to program the bad boy Ore_ele. How much did you write from scratch and how much of it was prewritten code?

A few hours to write the ground work and about 2 days to work out the bugs. It was all written from scratch (and so is fairly ugly).

I know, I was just playing about reacting. ELO has been something that nearly everyone has been supportive for since we started trying to get it over a year ago.
