In a capitalistic society, workers can be exploited through the high-price-low-wage formula. How does communism exploit?

Communism guarantees labor, bread and vodka to all, but it keeps wages all the same for all, so there is no real desire, drive or incentive to work hard. A street sweeper makes the same amount of money as a surgeon. This stagnates the economy, plus it leaves too many employed people with nothing to do, 10 workers doing a one person job.

On balance, does a communist country promise less progress than a capitalistic one? If yes, where does it all go wrong?

A Communist regime does not promise less progress but a slower form of betterment. There is not the urgency for the "next best thing" that drives capitalism. If a brand of overcoat keeps out the cold why spend the peoples money on a new version of the same thing. At the moment the Chinese are undertaking a hugely expensive drive to improve the life of its poorer peoples. This is not through any altruism but because they intend to replace a failing American influence in the global markets and diplomacy. China knows the secret to World Domination is through our pockets not with nukes and the Chinese people will benefit the most.

Communism exploits by lying to it's members like most worker's unions do in the United States. The lie is, "everyone gets the same, we all work and get paid equally." The truth is something closer to, "A select few elites will reap benefits and wealth that 99% of the country will never have." Watch any documentary on Cuba and then read the biography of Castro for proof.
