What exactly is the utility of statments of purpose, particularly in graduate school applications? They appear wholly superfluous. The committee should be able to glean all they need about your writing, analytical, and academic abilities from other parts of most applications, so statements of purpose feel as if they are simply made to waste individuals' time, not least that of the committee members. Would it not make more sense just to forgo them altogether?

While I understand that almost no one will see this because I am posting it here, if anyone does see it, please feel free to reply substantively to my questions and thoughts.

As someone who'll be filling one out soon, I'll keep an eye on this thread.
