I was just wondering, what do you all consider a good GPA? A high GPA? An excellent GPA? There has been a lot of controversy over the importance of the GPA and its utilization. How about weighted GPA? (Assuming reg class is 4, honors is 5, AP/DE is 6.) Any thoughts?

I consider not worrying too much about something as subjective as GPA a very positive sign for one's intelligence.

That really depends on what you intend to do with it. It really only matters if you want to go to college. It also matters for what tier are trying to get into. Answer those questions and I'll try to give you an idea as to what is good.

I am really striving to go to Duke University, and the only way I can go there is on a full-ride scholarship. I really want to do something in the fields of mathematics and science, something like calculus or physics.

Doesn't matter, according to the College Board it is. That means that even people who know that the GPA system is total bullsh!t can't do anything about it and have to play by the rules.

I hate the requirement to take level courses that only serve to lower my GPA.

Worst part is, many teachers have different standards for grading, so a paper that would be an A for one teacher could be a B for the next, and so on. And some teachers take late work, while others do not.

There's a world of difference between asking "For a given college, what GPA should I aim for?" and "What is a good GPA?" out of context.
