4/2/2012 12:25:10 AM Posted: 1 year ago Where I live, it is really quiet. Late at night, before I go to sleep, I like to turn off all of the lights and lay there in the quiet. Sometimes I will open the window and let the fresh breeze run over my face. I lay under the covers completely still and just watch my eyelids. Pictures start to dance around my head. I start to hear sounds. Elaborate sounds that pop in from out of no where, different from my normal thoughts, almost as if i were watching a movie. After a few minutes, I feel as though I am floating and my body seems to swell up to twice it's normal size. I get really warm. This is normally the most peaceful that I feel all day. One could equate it to the hypnagogic state that a person reaches before they drift off to sleep, but most people are not aware at this time and fall right off. I drip down to a pin and quietly observe. The most fascinating ideas come out at this time.

4/2/2012 1:02:32 AM Posted: 1 year ago I was an insomniac for two years.
Being an insomniac is an interesting experience. It's not like sleep deprivation, really, because it's primary symptom isn't that you don't get tired, per se, but more that you just don't feel like sleeping. When it first started out, six hours would be enough to make me feel rested, and I could no longer sleep any longer than six hours exactly. Later, the amount of time it took for me to wake up after I fell asleep began receding, until I was down to two to three hours per night. Sometimes, I'd go days without sleeping at all. I'd start hallucinating and I'd be quite irritable. It had other psychological effects, though. I was generally apathetic, which was ultimately liberating. It made me fearless, which was beneficial at times; however, it also made me numb, which is a damned shame. And then, of course, there's the zoning out... it's like, sometimes, I'd zone out so hard, I'd start dreaming and everything. Sometimes, it'll happen while I'm standing up. So, life became a general daze and there were times that I found it difficult to distinguish reality. So, I don't remember very much from back then. There were really good times, but it was generally pretty bad. |

4/2/2012 1:13:06 AM Posted: 1 year ago ^ damn, that sounds kind of intense. O.o how did you recover back to a more normal sleeping pattern?
I've always gone through insomnia phases, but it's not all that bad really, i usually fall asleep by at least 5 am and can always catch up on the weekends. it helps to let your energy out during the day, although working at an office job isn't very cohesive to that at times. 4/2/2012 3:27:01 AM Posted: 1 year ago I have similiar experiences to LDF when trying to sleep.
First I try to let go of all my thoughts, which is really hard. Little tid bits of random information are always popping up in my brain making me think of something else. I will feel tired, and try to push out those thoughts, but they will just keep coming. So I found out a way to make me go to sleep. What I do is just let my mind wander. It is not totally giving up thought process, but is doesn't not focus thoughts towards specific areas either. What I do is just let whatever little random thought that pops into my brain just come. I don't worry about whether it makes sense or not, that is detrimental. I let it come as it comes, and eventually A dream will sprout up from it, and I am asleep. This process is extremely annoying sometimes ad hard to get to, but it generally works. If you are an insomniac, then I reccommend trying this. Don't put energy or focus into your thoughts. Let the come, and eventually you will drift into the ever inviting sleep. DDO NewsCenter Episode 4: http://www.debate.org... |

4/3/2012 12:46:57 AM Posted: 1 year ago An insomnia thread? I must remember this next time I'm up late. Not that it couldn't be considered late now (1:43am), but I'm really talking more like 8am here... It's not so much that I can't fall asleep, just that I don't sleep. I can get tired, but not to where I want to try to go to sleep.
I'd say Ren is exactly right about how you just zone out and maybe start dreaming. I can't decide whether I like that or not. It's certainly interesting to be able to dream in the middle of the day. But if you zone out and start dreaming without even realizing, it can really be weird. I'll just find myself somewhere and wonder what in hell is going on because reality seemed so different a minute ago. Or I'll just zone out and not think of anything. Then someone could ask me what I was just doing, and I'll have no answer to give them. I definitely do not like that. At that point I just try to make myself get some sleep whether I'm sleepy or not, with varying degrees of success. I'll try that suggestion about just letting my mind wander. If nothing else, I'll have interesting things to post in this wonderful new thread! Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. http://xkcd.com... |

4/3/2012 1:04:40 AM Posted: 1 year ago You guys are sounding like "Requim for a Dream"
Here's something I used to do to fall asleep. It's since developed into what i described earlier. 1. Stretch before you get into bed. This is important. you need to get your body fully relaxed. 2. Tell yourself a story. The story doesn't have to make sense. Just think of random words. Lots of nouns are good, because it helps to visualize what you are thinking, and makes the story easier. OR: 1. STRETCH 2. get in bed and lay on your back. (if you can't fall asleep like this, you can always roll over later.) Flex each of your muscles for 5 seconds, and then release them, starting at the top of your head. Forehead, cheek muscles, neck muscles, shoulders, arms, stomach, legs, feet. Then lay still. 3. take a few minutes to let your mind wander and relieve your thoughts on the day. 4. Feel your body sinking. Imagine running down the stairs or going down an elevator. Imagine that you are a feather that is falling down towards the ground, slightly swaying, but SINKING. 5. If your mind drifts away from that, fine, but always go back to thinking about sinking. Just concentrate on that feeling of your body going down, down, down. I have lots of techniques that i've developed over the years to sort of push your mind into sleep.
