I have a Compare and Contrast essay on them tommorow, so that's how this came up.

Anybody have any comments on their doctrines?

Kung Fuzi was Chinese, and believed that people were naturally good.

Plato was Greek, and believed that people were naturally bad.

Say Confucious instead of Kung Fuzi. We're not Chinese.

Anyway, they're much more different than alike. Confucious developed an elaborate moral code which was to be the basis of government and life in general for East Asia from until the time Confucious lived and is still going on today. Plato was more of a philosopher, a very important philosopher at that -- the founder of Western Philosophy. Confucious changed lives, while Plato taught - and his words have been quite important. I'd say Confucious has had a much bigger impact on the world. Though, if it weren't for Plato - maybe not Socrates, and if no Socrates - maybe no Aristotle, and if no Aristotle - maybe no Alexander the Great. They're both quite important.

I don't like Plato's conclusions. He thinks that lying to manipulate the public is okay. I disagree, as this leads to corruption, especially when only a select caste can govern and are trusted to be enlightened ("Napoleon is always right".)

Yeah, true. Plato pretty much invented propaganda. Confucious's ideas were more morally just than Plato's imo. Confucious taught honor and respect. Although, Plato did lay the foundation for political theory (the Republic).

Also, a correction in my above post. Socrates taught Plato, not vice-versa.

I think the most important aspect of Confucius' thought was his focus on ritual/tradition, and I would say that he didn't exactly think human nature was good, that was Mencius. Confucius thought that when humans were good if they combined their nature with ritual, which allowed for proper action and a harmonious society.
