Religion has served its time, and is no longer needed

dashdustrider

Religion has become obsolete in today's world. When religion was first introduced it was a way for people to become individual, and to have the rights of an individual. Now with most of the major powers in the world being a people's government, every person is an individual. I argue that though religion has served its time, it is no longer needed. Based strictly on the facts that the purpose of religion has been fufilled, and it does not do good any more....

All Morals are Relative

Spaztoid

First of all, I would like to thank whomever accepts this debate. I look forward to a good debate. =====Rules===== This debate will be one of moral relativism. The Pro side will be arguing that morals are relative and the Con side will argue that that morals are not relative. Please avoid the use of insults and avoid becoming angry or petty. This is a debate, so please maintain your dignity. Finally, this debate will hold both sides to a legal standard of proof for all evidence submitted. I...

smoking should be illegal

jingzhezhang

Everyone knows that smoking kills. That's not why it should be made illegal. Nicotine is very addictive. That is not why it should be illegal. I am not a smoker because I value my own life. However, I believe suicide, should someone want it, should be legal. I consider smoking "prolonged suicide." Honestly, that is why I don't smoke, but that is not why it should be illegal. Okay, I'm done with that weird repetitive schpiel. I'll get to the point ("Get on with it!"). Smokers inhale approximate...

I affirm the resolution, RESOLVED: Anthropocentrism ought to be valued above biocentrism. For clarification of this debate round, I offer the following definitions: Anthropocentrism: considering human beings as the most significant entity of the universe Biocentrism: considering all forms of life as having intrinsic value Intrinsic value: value that a thing has "in itself," or "for its own sake," or "as such," or "in its own right." Extrinsic value: value that is not intrinsic; that which...

George Bush is an idiot

RoyLatham

Understand that I am Con in this debate. In one of the Forum threads, http://www.debate.org/forums/politics/topic/4459/8/ ddo member emmalmalcolm made the claim "Bush is actually an idiot. Obama is a brilliant lawyer, professor, speaker and author. You can disagree with his policy but that's just fact." The claim is common. I challenged emmalmalcolm to defend the claim, but emmalmalcolm, despite having been on the site, let the challenge expire. So now I am opening the challenge to anyone who...

Promoting world wide democratic principles should be a higher priority than promoting sovereignty.

Rockylightning

THIS IS A ROUND 2 DEBATE! Definitions: Sovereignty is the quality of having supreme, independent authority over a territory. Democratic Principles: Democracy is a political government carried out either directly by the people (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (Representative democracy). Therefore democratic principles are defined as principles of a democratic government. ------------------------------------- 1. Sovereignty is more important than demo...

Free will

gizmo1650
RoyLatham

First, to clear any possible confusion, I am arguing that free will does not exist and that all events, past present and future, were determined at the big bang. Also, I would ask that my opponent avoid self evident facts, if you can not prove it the only reason you have to believe it exists is your belief itself. Back to the argument, my basis of thinking is that if one knows the location and velocity of every particle in the universe as well as a complete understanding of the laws of physi...
