2016 Was the Hottest Year Ever. It’s the Third Year in a Row of Record-High Heat. Will 2017 be the year climate warming skeptics become pariahs?

2016 Was the Hottest Year Ever. It’s the Third Year in a Row of Record-High Heat. Will 2017 be the year climate warming skeptics become pariahs?
  • Yes, I think so.

We know the world is warming – no factor can explain it aside from human emissions of greenhouse gases. Despite this, people who deny the basic facts of climate change have tried to argue that the Earth is either not warming or is only slowly heating. Well that just isn’t true anymore. The last three years are the nail in the coffin of the deniers of climate change.

  • The issue is that people are not seeing it for themselves

I live in a northern climate in the US. Nine months out of the year, it's too cold to grow anything in a vegetable garden and for the year of 2017, we never hit 90 degrees this summer, not to mention the obscene amount of rain that we've had (increased amounts of rain is not caused by global warming). The reason that people don't believe in global warming (actually A LOT of people do, but they disagree with WHY it's happening -- mostly because they don't think that humans are the cause) is because they are not seeing it nor experiencing it for themselves. It might be different for someone in Texas or Florida, but people who brave through nine months of winter every year are just going to laugh in your face.

  • It's going to take a lot

I'm not sure that one more year is going to be enough for those skeptics of climate change. They already have ample scientific evidence and a vast majority of scientists telling them that climate change is real, yet they still resist the notion. I'm afraid until something drastic happens, there will continue to be staunch skeptics, unwilling to admit that there is a problem.

  • No, 2017 won't change climate warming skeptics.

2017 will not change climate warming skeptics. It is unlikely that any event will change the mind of those who do not accept climate change is happening. There are many reasons for this: economic, fear of government control, political philosophy. The good news is that people can take action against climate change without government force. Consumers can simply buy green products and use less energy.

  • No, I believe in more enlightened and educated circles, climate warming skeptics are already pariahs.

The scientific evidence of global warming is simply irrefutable at this point. Even if humanity does not want to sacrifice their current way of life, that change will one day come if they continue forward at this pace. Climate warming skeptics are already being mocked and outcasted by educated scientific circles and a public that thinks it is more wise we heed the warnings of the most educated on the topic.
