American Express offers parental leave: Should paid parental leave be law?

  • Attentive parenting promotes a healthy future.

    I think that allowing all citizens the option to take parental leave will improve the quality of care for the next generation. There may be many parents who work because they fear the loss of income. By allowing them the option to supplement their income they will be able to spend more time with their children. This will promote healthy emotional growth in children.

  • Yes, I think so.

    But the larger reality is that most U.S. workers don’t get paid family leave at all. Yet, access is steadily increasing. Last year, New York and San Francisco passed paid family leave laws, and, President elect Donald Trump said during his campaign that he would push for six weeks of paid family leave for new mothers.

  • Yes, it should.

    Paid parental leave is important because it ensures that children are best taken care of during the most vulnerable time in their lives. It also is good for the company because it keeps productivity higher by preventing tired and overworked parents from making mistakes while at work because they have no leave.

  • Small companies can't afford it.

    It's great that large companies can offer this benefit to their employees. It's wonderful for the people that work for these companies. But many companies do not have the ability to pay a second person if one is not doing the work. For this reason, a company might decline to hire someone because they can't afford to pay a substitute.
