Of course people are spending more on Christmas today than they did 30 years ago. Price inflation for electronics, food, toys, and everything else has went up a lot in that time frame while a lot of wages have remained stagnant. No one even has a choice to spend more because to not do so would mean to completely break the tradition all together.

Consumers are definitely spending more today than 30 years ago. This is because our society is more consumer-oriented than ever. Even if people have to go into major debt to buy gifts, they usually end up doing it. It is just how our country functions today and big business encourages it.
