Are GMO foods the answer to solving world hunger?

  • Part of the Answer, But Not All

Genetically modified crops are part of the answer to world hunger. Increasing yields by increasing resistance to insects and drought will make crops more viable in more ecosystems. Yet food distribution is the major problem facing world hunger today. There is plenty of food for everyone, it's just that not everyone who is hungry is getting food.

  • GMO is the answer

Genetically modified organisms are the only way to stop hunger. Sure, it is dangerous, and can be unhealthy, but consider that it produces much more food. With more practice, we could make it more efficiently. GMO's are without a doubt the only alternative we have. Traditional growing methods have left the world starving.

  • Yes GMO Foods will Prevent Hunger.

With the world food supply of corn, and many other things being eaten up faster than we can grow or make it genetically modified organisms will someday be the only way to help with the growing shortage of food. We are a world that is to over populated, and we need to do things to prevent more hunger outbreaks as it could lead to disease, and many other bad things to spiral off from it. I am not all for Genetically Modified Organisms, but this may be the only avenue we have to take.

  • We are well on our way.

GMOs help food stay good for much longer, and it combines vitamins from other foods in another piece of food so that it is easier for those who don't have the wide variety of options that we do.
It won't fix everything, but it is leading the path to fixing the starvation problem. Most of our foods are GMOs, and since people haven't died from it I'm sure that we shouldn't ban it.

  • Yes it is.

As more GMO crops can be grown on relatively small parcels of land, they are an answer to feeding growing world populations
Increased yield: through genetic engineering, the wheat can be made to produce more harvest able wheat, or to produce more harvests a year. With a world population growing as big as ours, more food and better food is the answer to feeding a future population. The hope that GMO foods might bring solutions to malnutrition and world hunger was never more dramatically illustrated than when Time magazine ran a cover story titled “Grains of Hope.” The article joyfully announced the development of a genetically engineered “golden rice.” This new strain of GM rice has genes from viruses and daffodils spliced into its genetic instructions. The result is a form of rice that is a golden-yellow color (much like daffodil flowers), and that produces beta-carotene, which the human body normally converts into Vitamin A. Nearly a million children die every year because they are weakened by Vitamin A deficiencies and an additional 350,000 go blind. Golden rice, said Time, will be a godsend for the half of humanity that depends on rice for its major staple. Merely eating this rice could prevent blindness and death.

  • They cause tumors

LONDON, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Rats fed a lifetime diet of Monsanto's genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weedkiller Roundup suffered tumours and multiple organ damage, according to a French study published on Wednesday.

Although the lead researcher's past record as a critic of the industry may make other experts wary of drawing hasty conclusions, the finding will stoke controversy about the safety of GM crops.

In an unusual move, the research group did not allow reporters to seek outside comment on their paper before its publication in the peer-reviewed journal Food and Chemical Toxicology and presentation at a news conference in London.

Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and colleagues said rats fed on a diet containing NK603 - a seed variety made tolerant to dousings of Roundup - or given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in the United States died earlier than those on a standard diet.

The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumours, as well as severe liver and kidney damage.

The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

Seralini was part of a team that flagged previous safety concerns based on a shorter rat study in a scientific paper published in December 2009 but this takes things a step further by tracking the animals throughout their two-year lifespan.

Monsanto said at the time of the earlier research that the French researchers had reached "unsubstantiated conclusions."

Seralini believes his latest lifetime rat tests give a more realistic and authoritative view of risks than the 90-day feeding trials that form the basis of GM crop approvals, since three months is only the equivalent of early adulthood in rats.

  • POISON = CANCER

GMO food would be spreading horrible toxic chemicals to countries that barely have clean water already. The GMO CO's want more money, that's all. Monsanto. FDA. Just stop using horrible chemicals and it would be fine. Go back to organic. WE DON'T NEED GMO CROPS - REAL CROPS WORK EVEN BETTER! AND WON'T KILL US!

  • GMOs are and will not solve world hunger!

It is just an money motivated controlled system that big evil corporations (Monsanto) have introduced without societal and environmental implications taken account for. "Most certainly, agricultural scientists and leaders have a moral obligation to warn the political, educational, and religious leaders about the magnitude and seriousness of the arable land, food, and population problems that lie ahead, even with breakthroughs in biotechnology. If we fail to do so, then we will be negligent in our duty and inadvertently may be contributing to the pending chaos of incalculable millions of deaths by starvation. But we must also speak unequivocally and convincingly to policy makers that global food insecurity will not disappear without new technology; to ignore this reality will make future solutions all the more difficult to achieve."

  • GMOs that require poison KILL people too.

"Do you really want a corporation responsible for mass producing pesticides modifying our food supply? The very question is insane. Monsanto and other lethal chemical corporations have been banking on the ignorance of the American public for too long. They are about to take a crash course in a very harsh reality. It's the people who will win not Monsanto."

  • Poison chemical companies in charge of modifying our food supply with GMO's? I think not!

Really, what an ignorant question, which exhibits a total lack of awareness of the topic. The lack of ethics and totally unbridled greed that Monsanto and other chemical corporations have demonstrated in their long and illustrious histories, isn't enough. You have to ask? Farmers nearly being subjected to slavery as the lion share of their profits are eaten up by Monsanto, as they.Cornering the market on seeds. Patenting them because they are so unique yet refusing to allow labeling because they're just the same what Hypocrisy! Do you really want a corporation responsible for mass producing pesticides modifying our food supply? The very question is insane. Monsanto and other lethal chemical corporations have been banking on the ignorance of the American public for too long .They are about to take a crash course in a very harsh reality. It's the people who will win not Monsanto.

  • Fooled by no food

The only reason we will have a food shortage is because Monsanto is creating it. Killing off our bee supply so we no longer have anything to pollinate our food. Anything that has a pesticide built right into it is going to kill us off eventually too. Look at all the gastro problems our people have today versus when our ancestors grew up. Where do you think that is coming from? If the stomachs of the bugs eating the plants can blow up, what do you think it is doing to us humans?

  • Screwing over vegetarians

Many of the GMO's are made with animal genes. Companies then sell these foods without telling people about this. Vegetarians may think they aren't eating animals, but they are. Help our vegetarians out and vote no on GMO's. This argument brought to you by a genius student of genetics and science things.

  • We already could.

We already could, if everyone just took their fair share. There has been enough food to feed all the people on Earth, so if we didn't then, why would we do it now? We aren't completely sure of all the side affects of these foods. They could do more harm than good.

  • There's a lot of money advertising that it can...Use that budget to feed the hungry!

So by removing the natural crops in the countries that are hungry and giving them seeds that cannot grow without fertilizers, and the seeds from these plants cannot be replanted, it is just creating a dependency on GMO crops. There's a lot of money spent by Monsanto and others to advertise that GMOs are the answer to world hunger. There's already a surplus of food like products being created from the surplus of corn. This is such a complicated, convoluted political issue now but people (especially American citizens) need to start doing their research and stop relying on the media and advertisements for information.

  • An end to world poverty will bring an end to world hunger.

GMO seed is produced with the aim of making money. GMO companies patent the seeds and make them sterile so that the seed cannot be saved and used for replanting. This requires the world's hungry to buy seed annually for food production. Since GMO producing companies are buying up competing seed companies, there are less and less alternatives. GMO seeds require a great deal of water and fertilizer, requiring more money. In the end, studies have shown that GMO seeds do not produce more food than regular non-GMO seeds. Bio-tech companies have invested millions of dollars in developing these seeds and are protecting their investment, not trying to feed the world's hungry.
