  • Manmade sinkholes are increasing

    I believe that the rate of sinkholes opening up is increasing because humans are making more pipelines in the road and they are collapsing, causing severe sinkholes in roadways.I i i i i i i i i i i ii i i i i i i i i i i

  • I would say eys

Because the areas where they usually occur, especially florida are getting way more human activity lately, as in getting houses built on ground that is prone to sinkholes. However, it might just seem that way because they're a hot topic on the news today and as there are more houses being built, it might just be a bigger impact.

  • Statistics say "yes"

Although there is no conspiracy theory here. Global warming has increased rainfalls dramatically in many parts of the world, often interspersed with droughts. The dry earth from the drought is easily washed away when the increased rainfall comes, and it is this rainfall that eats away at the earth undernearth, causing the sinkhole to open up. Expect to see more as the rainfall increases.

  • Yes, it seems that way.

It does seem that we're hearing more about sinkholes in the news, whereas you didn't hear of such things years ago, but then maybe we're just hearing about it more because the news is reporting them. However, with all of the changes in our environment, it makes sense to believe that this is contributing to the causes of sinkholes, and therefore they are increasing in frequency.

  • It sure seems that way.

It seems that years ago you would hear about a very infrequent sinkhole happening, but in recent years, there seems to have been many that have made the news, or are either just simply getting reported whereas they didn't earlier, but it also seems that with all kinds of environmental changes, it's reasonable to believe that they are increasing in frequency.

  • I tend to disagree.

Sinkholes are becoming more frequent. Especially in low lying water areas, such as south Florida. Sinkholes are swallowing homes, cars, even people. I am pretty sure that Florida is slowly sinking into the ocean/gulf and the only area that will be left will be the North Panhandle. I read in the paper nearly everyday that another sinkhole has taken over a road.

  • Not at all

It would be like asking is homosexuality increasing and the answer is no. It is a well known fact that homosexuality has been around for much longer than any of could imagine.

Homesexuality like sinkholes are just more widely publicized now adays which gives people the assumption that both are on the rise when in fact, it is just that you are finally hearing about the subjects via media

  • No, sinkholes are not increasing.

Sinkholes are not increasing in frequency, but they are perhaps increasing in impact. As people continue to expand, building in wider areas, and perhaps less stable areas, more of the natural sinkholes that occur will impact people. In addition, news media being what it is today, incidents that would have "flown under the radar" years ago are now getting more national media coverage. These factors combined may create the illusion there are more such events, but the frequency has not actually changed.
