Even though the media is consistently held in a negative light, they do have their good points. When they cover positive events such as a person doing positive things for their neighborhood or those that band together to help during a disaster, it brings people together as a whole. It is a good source of information and keeps the people informed of what's going on in the world. If they did not exist most would have no clue as to what was going on locally, nationally, or globally.
I think people tend to look at media a bit too negatively, and not try to give some focus on the things that are positive. For example, children educational shows. Kids can fall in love with certain characters, for example, Sesame Street, while still grasping some education values while watching.
