Ban on mountaintop removal coal mining: Does mountaintop removal harm communities?

  • It may eventually

When they mine on the mountain tops they use explosives to do so and well that could somehow pose a threat to the communities because the debris that is being exploded has to be dumped down on the surface of the earth and the debris may have toxins or what not on them.

  • Although unfortunate I don't see mountaintop removal as harmful.

Although I can see the concerns people would have about removing mountaintops, without any knowledge of geology I am assuming it is a harmless and cosmetic action. Certainly ruining the beauty of natural formations is sad and at some degree it positively effects our surroundings to have these things. That said, the coal mining itself COULD harm communities if CO2 is being deposited en masse, but I can't speak to that.
