Biofuel: Can biofuels serve as a major energy source, relieving foreign oil dependency?

  • Biofuel could relieve our dependence on foreign oil.

Biofuel is a viable and sustainable source of alternative
energy. It is cheaper and cleaner that petroleum
based fuel. It is readily available, and
can be made from used cooking oil and various crops. It should be one of the government’s main
priorities to transition from petroleum based fuels to biofuel as quickly as
possible in order to stop being dependent on foreign oil.

  • Not Cheap Enough

Biofuels at this point are not a commercially viable energy source because they cannot compete with fossil fuels on cost at this stage in their development. However, the vast shale reserves in the U.S. and new methods of extracting oil have considerably lessened America's dependence on foreign sources of oil.
