You can trust the government -- to act in its own best interests. Depending on where in the world you live, sometimes its own best interest is serving the people. But most of the time, its best interests are perpetuating its existence and eliminating dissent. If you live in the United States, trust it to somehow do both, very incompetently.
As the federal government debt continues to climb to unimaginable levels, trust in the government will erode further and further. As resources become strained, services will diminish. It is hard to trust a government that is gridlocked in Washington. Plus, there are almost daily reports of how the government has let someone down somewhere--the most recent incident involved people trying to sign up for healthcare insurance on the government's website.
