Did a newspaper act irresponsibly by publishing the addresses of gun owners?

  • Yes they did

'm by no means a pro gun guy, but putting that map out was just ridiculous. The amount of innocent people put in danger (and potential undercover people having their cover blown) just due to being against guns was unforgivable garbage journalism. I still can't believe that any reputable news organization would do something so careless.

  • They have no business with other people's personal info!

They can't just take your name and address and publish it! How would you like it if they published YOUR name and address? That's so unfair. They totally acted irresponsibly. Some RANDOM person could come to your house! They had NO reason for doing that. I have to say that it was absolutely unreasonable.

  • Yes they did act irresponsibly.

It is ridiculous to think that you actually have to give out gun owners addresses because you think it is public information. Why would this be so? That is someones private information. Did the people who had their addresses published know that their addresses were going to be shown to anyone who pleases?

  • Yes, it was egregious

Publishing such a map would only serve to diminish the targeted people's privacy and personal safety. The story did not require that level of detail to address its main points. Not only that, but it also violated everyone else's privacy on the grounds that it outed people for being unarmed though omission. Also the government release of FOUO information is irresponsible in itself and should be controlled as people giving personal information to the government assumes an expectation on non-disclosure to the general public.

  • They Were Very Irresponsible

The newspaper that published the addresses of gun owners acted very irresponsible. This was an invasion of privacy and should not have been done. What makes this look even more irresponsible is that several people had to agree that it was okay to put this in the paper. Someone needs to be fired.

  • They put a target on everyone's back

The newspaper that published the addresses of gun owners was definitely irresponsible. The newspaper put targets on the back of not only the gun owners who could now be chastised for legally purchasing and maintaining their firearms but also on those who do not own a gun because now every criminal knows which houses they will not have to worry about when breaking into them.

  • Information is power. It could even save lives.

Some on the pro side say it puts a target on people with guns, others note it puts a target on those without. What the newspaper did any criminal could have done secretly. What people should do is realize that legislation needs to change with the times. With online records being the future we need to develop rules.
One pro notes that this could blow the cover of undercover cops, I have seen know evidence to back this up, but at the same time if you got a neighbor that seems a bit off and they do own a gun, maybe calling the authorities might save a few lives.

  • No, that information is in the public record

Owning a gun involves a public record. A simple search of public records will give you information about who owns a gun, his or her background, and pertinent information such as access. How is it an invasion of privacy if it's already in the public record? That's like saying that it's an invasion of privacy to have my home phone number published, even though it's already listed in the Yellow pages. Furthermore, it's common knowledge that this information is of public record, so gun owners already know.
