Did Woman Have More Influence On Society Throughout HIstory Than Men?

Asked by: RevelationEm
  • Lack of resources yet a breakthrough

Since the beginning of time, the society has always been ,without a doubt, a male dominate one. Women from the start have been struggling to rise above the critics of the biased society. Coming back to the topic, the influence on society in terms of the statistics available, definitely men win the round! However, considering the amount of resources available to women, i think otherwise.

Being a male dominant society, women have had to fight for their rights for almost everything. Starting from getting the right to vote and then gradually moving to various fields to gain recognition. Women have had to put more effort to make the same influence as compared to men. The reason is obviously not that they are not capable but as I have mentioned before due to the biased society. It is evident that women, if given a chance, are equivalent to men. Eleanour Roosevelt, the First Lady in The US, Chaired the John F. Kennedy committee to start a second wave of feminism and supported equality among all races when it was unheard of! Hilary Clinton has held many prestigious positions. She had a leading role in investigating health issues during 9/11. Many leading charitiable trusts have been founded by women. Even without any recognition, people have rise and fought the society to make an impact! Harriet tubman, a slave in the early 1800’s ran away and worked for a living. However after settling herself she went back to help other slaves get their freedom!
Concluding my point, women are more influencing than men as not only do they achieve heights equivalent to men but also inspire many along the way. The amount of struggle to make an impact on a male dominating society is not easy and requires much effort! Women have endeavoured in various fields and risen to together to get recognition. I believe the days are not far when statistically women would have achieved more than men!

  • History is dominated by men

A fact sheet published by UNESCO presented worldwide statistics to show that 30% of STEM researchers are female. This number was lower in the past. This statistic and trend is also prevalent in many other fields, such as politics, philosophy or economics. These spheres have always been statistically dominated by men and in many was these major fields have driven progress and brought us to where we are today.

Secondly, returning to the point in politics, there has not been a single female president in the USA. Even in other countries, the prevalence of female heads of states are extremely rare. Politicians are in the end of the day, the ones that shape society through their decisions. Clearly these men therefore have a much bigger influence as they have the final say in these decisions. The point of "Behind every great man there's a great woman" is moot. Regardless of any influence that may come from their female partners or otherwise, men decide. Additionally, most of the advisers and committees that advise these politicians to decide are also dominated by men.

As an example of the lack of influence from the female gender, we can see the prevalence of the gender pay gap. Even adjusting for causes of these pay gaps such as the maternal leave that disrupt career progression, the pay gap still exists. If one has the leverage on society, it does not make sense to influence society to pay you less money.

This does not downplay the influence that women have played throughout society. A lot of the areas that have been dominated by women historically such as raising children or other pink collar jobs are not conventionally documented. So we do not see how these forces have influenced society but nonetheless, to say they had more influence than men is ludicrous.

  • Armies in History

So across the thousands of years, humans have been around, especially the last five centuries, armies made up of practically all men have charged into battle and changed the course of history through these battles and wars. Also, for a lot of history, females have been in a lesser role in history.
