  • Thanksgiving Has Always Ben Sacred

Thanksgiving, for as long as I could remember, has been a time to gather with family and put work worries behind, and plan for Black Friday shopping the next day. Now, in pursuit of the almighty dollar, retailers are encroaching on this sacred day by opening on Thanksgiving Day luring you in with Black Friday sale prices. The fever for Black Friday sales will draw people into the stores, whether it is Thanksgiving or the day after Thanksgiving. Stores moved to Thanksgiving Day with the hopes of drawing a larger crowd but as more and more stores have fallen suit, they are now competing for the same customers as they were when Black Friday was actually on Friday. Stores are not accomplishing anything by opening on Thanksgiving. Give the employees the day off, let them spend their time with family and restore the sanctity of Thanksgiving. Let shoppers fight it out the day after.

  • Thanksgiving is for families.

Stores should not be open on Thanksgiving day. Thanksgiving is a time to spend with families and not meant to be spent in stores getting the best deal on a purchase. Even if you chose to not spend the day with your family, others will be forced to go to work to support your desires.

  • Yes, breaks are important too.

All employees should be given the option to be off work at Thanksgiving, as for any other holiday. Having a break once in a while helps promote productivity among workers. While it would be helpful to have someone working all the time, it doesn't seem fair to force any particular few to stay during a holiday or to cut off some holidays. If you're still really inclined to keeping workers on holidays, perhaps provide an extra incentive, as opposed to forcing them.

  • It is not possible for all employees to be off work on Thanksgiving.

It would be nice if all employess were able to be off work on a holiday to spend time with their families. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. There are many employees who work in safety and health related jobs, such as the police, firemen and doctors and nurses that are needed to work because crime still happens on holidays and people still get sick on holidays.
