Do electric cars perform as well as gas fueled vehicles?

  • defently

There several manufacturers out there like Porsche, Audi, Tesla and Mercedes that are leading the way in hybrid and electric vehicle technologies. Some of which have proven to be faster and more efficient. Porsche also designed and built the world's first hybrid race car, the 918 RSR. Now if you looking for the growl of a V8 in an electric car, you'll be sorely disappointed.

  • Of course electric is superior to combustion (hey--spell check lost edit!)

Electric motors in any form have only been around 150 years - gasoline (ICE) about 100 - but steam (external combustion engine) much longer. Electric motors have been, and are today the number one industrial and large-scale power source including for FIXED TRACK STREETCARS, SHIPS, EARTH MOVERS, and TRAINS. THERE ARE HUGE PERFORMANCE REASONS FOR THAT, and the only remaining limiting factor for cars is temporary: BATTERY & CAPACITORS need about a 5X performance boost - to match the concentrated power of gasoline in the relatively small size and weight required for cars. But combustion engines also WASTE 60% OF THEIR ENERGY AS HEAT - electric about 10%. Electric motors provide far greater torque at low speeds, and smoothness at high speed. They offer better durability with far less maintenance.
In 2013 we have viable plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles and hybrid fuel-cell vehicles that meet 100% of local needs, and given a fraction of the existing infrastructure for gasoline and diesel, will enable long distance travel without ICE backup within a few years.
USED electrics are priced very affordably, and replacement battery packs cost less every year as well. It is also viable to generate ones own electricity and store it using recycled battery packs as well as your car, to provide backup to your home. Eventually individual over-production can go to H2 gas for use in fuel cells as well.

  • Electric cars perform better than gas cars and are not dirty and smelly!

Like a smoker following you around all day lighting-up? If you drive a gas car it's like a tobacco smoker is following you around when you drive. I agree that electric cars perform as well as gas fueled vehicles, and also use less resources. I believe that electric cars exceed the performance of gas fueled vehicles. Electric cars can be charged at home, versus having to go to the dirty smelly gas station to fuel up. Using electricity is better for the environment, not using up the Earth's natural resources, and also reduces CO2 emission in the atmosphere. It also reduces cancer rates in cities that have lots of electric cars. Also it makes no sense to send billions of dollars to some countries that sometimes have terrorists that hate the American dream.

  • Some electric cars do, but not all.

  • I believe that electric cars do perform well.

Electric cars give performance that is enough for today's society. Electric cars are able to handle themselves on the freeway and on the sides streets. Maintenance is not too much of a problem as most places can handle these vehicles, especially since they are growing in popularity these days. Companies are even releasing sports style electric cars for those who are not sure they can handle themselves on the track.

  • Electric cars are the future!

Electric cars are the future and the best thing for it. Reducing our dependency on foreign oil, while making the air cleaner are both positives, not to mention the cost saved in gasoline. Converting old cars to electric, while putting new electric cars on the road will make the roads a cleaner place, as well as boost the US economy going forward.

  • What are the options after we lose oil?

We don't have much oil left in our world now. And our population just keeps growing. We are already low on oil and the rate we consume oil is still increasing. We don't have much choice because we can't have gasoline cars without oil. And later in the future the world will keep developing ideas to make electric cars better

  • Weak electric motor

The Tesla race car (electric) only has 200 horse power at the most which makes it weak. That 200 horse power car is the most powerful electric car. A gasoline car like the Honda CRV can already have 185 horse power. Look at the Bugatti Veyron which is 1000 horse power, the Lexus IS has 300 horsepower.

  • Not even close

There are no convenient places for electric cars to recharge but there are gas stations for gas fueled cars. Gas fueled cars have more mileage per tank than electric cars do per charge. Electric cars only go about 200 miles per charge but gas fueled cars go about 500 miles tops. The gas fueled car also goes fast in speed.

  • No ,they do not work as well.

These cars are costly and complex to maintain. They will never be as good as gasoline vehicles, ever. They are also too small and slow. They are also too expensive to just buy one and it is not worth buying one if you have family. I believe that gasoline cars are the only way to go.

  • NO

Gas will never run out, electric cars are slow and can't go far due to the battery's weakness. Electricity will not beat the gas powered engines for now. Also electric cars have to be charged almost always and they take long to charge. Electric cars are expensive and not many people want to buy them.

  • Not for now.

Electric cars are usually slower and needs to be charged frequently. For the technology today, nope, it does not perform as well as gas vehicles. In the future, however, it may outperform gas vehicles as well as being better for the environment, but with the current technology they can only be used in the city.

  • Power is the key

Gasoline engines are very easy to tweak and adjust, to get them to perform well. Hybrids on the other hand are set at a specific power rating. Hybrids will never win in a race against a gasoline engine. There is no way hybrids will out perform the good old gasoline motor.

  • Depends on the definition of perform

It is obvious gas powered engines are going to provide more power. If that is your sole definition of perform then No. But if you are considering efficiency electric engines are close to ninety percent when gas are closer to seventy. It is difficult to find long lasting power for electric cars as well with fuel cells being limmited to batteries.

  • No.

There are so many problems with electric cars that make them difficult to live with, at least at this time. They're not as powerful or as fast as gas cars, and therefore are usually made small. They also need to be recharged frequently, making it impossible to make it through a long road trip. While an electric car will take all night to charge, filling a gas powered car just takes a few minutes. Electric cars aren't very efficient either since most electricity is made by burning coal anyway.

  • Electric cars have limited range, before they have to be recharged.

Electric cars have only a limited range. They have to be recharged regularly. You cannot go cross country in an electric car, like you can with a conventional gas-powered automobile. You also will not have the power of a conventional truck to pull a heavy load, if you use an electric vehicle.

  • I do not think electric cars perform as well as gas-fueled cars, because they do not have enough power.

Electric cars do not have enough power to perform in certain driving situations. They do not have a very fast acceleration rate. This could be dangerous in certain driving situations, when fast acceleration is needed to avoid an accident. They also would not perform very well for long distance interstate driving. Interstate driving is better when the car can perform well at high speeds.
