  • Yes, but.... (there's always a but)

There's a sense of urgency, privacy, and charisma when debating in person. Within the confines of DDO we allow ourselves to go at our own pace, we can double check our information so we're more confident about our argument, and our ability to accurately convey our message and/or emotions seems easier and less prone to giving away secrets we wish best kept. Speaking for myself on the latter of course.

I believe most people hate debating in person, but I think fewer people hate debating online.

  • Most are uncomfortable with different opinions

When I discuss differences in opinion with many of my friends/peers they grow agitated and it turns into an argument despite no inflammatory language being used on my part. Even if I ask one friend why he dislikes a song I like he gets defensive for no reason. I've gotten, what I think, are odd responses such as: "I don't want to talk about it right now," "stop thinking about it," "we just have different opinions," "stop trying to persuade me," and so on. Personally, I respect someone a lot based on how they discuss their opinions, not just what their opinions are. People seem to recoil when a difference in opinion pops up, choosing instead to talk about something we agree or just small talk rather than our differences. Another odd characteristic is one friend, who, when I ask him for an opinion, simply replies: "I'm not a critic." I'd say discussing your differences really allows you to get to know people.
