Open relationships create an environment of healthy communication about sex, friendship and general companionship. Rather than trying to find that rare person who meets all of your wants and needs, you can find several who each mean something unique to you. As long as there is trust and honest communication between all parties, it has the potential to be better than one on one relationships. It eases some of the pressure of trying to be perfect for someone, while not asking them to settle for less.
I think that open relationships can work if both members of
the relationship are mature enough. If
both members of the relationship agree to have sex with others, but never fall
in love with others, it can work. Or, if
both members agree to only have sex with others while their partner is
pregnant, it can work.
An open relationship can not work if either person is serious about the other person. They will start to get jealous over time and want more from their partner and the partner will start to feel like the person is getting clingy and that was not what they had agreed to.
