Do shows such as 16 and Pregnant or Teen Mom glorify teen pregnancy?

  • Well yes and no. But mainly yes

Because some girls might take it as their chance to get on tv and to be famous. The see other young ladies doing it and now a days every body wants to be like the next and always try to fit in. BUT then again it does not because some girls see how the young ladies on tv are going through hard times and sometimes the family even brakes up cause of it

  • Personally they do

This show may take you through some of the hardship they go through, but people should think about the fact that they had to audition to get on the show. Each season has new teens that some accidentally get pregnant, but others get pregnant on purpose. Before the shows thousands of teens were getting pregnant and they hard to find a way to provide for their children without television.

  • Please read below.

The initial series was a really great insight into the trials and struggles of being a Teen Mom (16 and Pregnant).

But now these parents are so darned rich off the back of it, that they in no way represent the struggles of a 'day-to-day Mother - especially not single.

Their houses are huge. Their gardens are huge. Their cars are huge. And they can afford to have had a heroin and weed addiction... Oh, yeah - and the porn income...

(I love Kailyn and Javi, and Maci.)

  • More Yes then No

I think that in the earlier episodes such as the 16 and Pregnant episodes and the very early Teen Mom episodes it could have been helpful for young girls to see the show but after the cast really started to make money off the show not so much. The latest episodes of the show shows them getting new houses, cars, nice clothes, etc. but it doesn't show them doing any kind of for lack of a better term "punching a time clock" type of work to obtain it. Now, I am not saying that any of those girls don't deserve the wealth and success because they do and lets face it they aren't making millions off the show but it did give them a huge advantage that they wouldn't have otherwise had. I think Catelynn and Tyler's struggle was the most raw and real and that is the one that can be benefited from the most especially if you read their book. And of course you would have to be open minded to adoption. They was faced with the hardest decision and that was to place their child for adoption no matter how painful it would be...Because they had to come to the realization that they just couldn't give her the life they wanted and hoped to give her. I think they have also stayed the most humble. What I don't see any of the cast saying in their speaking engagements, books, or advocacy for teen pregnancy is that not all girls that find themselves sixteen and pregnant will wind up on a hit television show earning a living from it. Most girls that do become pregnant at a young age will be poverty stricken for the larger part of their life and the bottom line is most of them will become pregnant again and create a viscous cycle that they may never overcome and in that aspect yes the show glamorizes teen pregnancy and makes it look easy.

  • How Hard It is

It shows girls and guys how hard it is to be a teen parent. Also everything you want to do you cant do it anymore. When some of them think they can do on their own. When some other them are still living with their parents. So it just shows how hard it is.

  • Get Pregnant, Make Millions

Reality television glorifies every kind of lifestyle imaginable. If an ordinary person fills a certain niche, there may be a reality television show just for you! From the Kardashians to pregnant teenagers, everything is edited to the glory of television ratings. Those ratings translate to advertising dollars. When those dollars come in, ordinary people become celebrities in the name of money. That happens to 1 in a million people. Unfortunately, teen mom shows glorify pregnancy and encourage girls to get pregnant in order to score their big break. Real money comes from hard work, not from intentionally getting knocked up to get on television.

  • Yep it does

There is a school in Kingston Ontario called Q.E.C.V.I and for a long time (and still might be) the teen pregnancy rate was 1 in 5 girls in the school. This is stupidly high, but the school tried a number of ways to tackle education for pregnant teens. I fully agreed with the notion of continuing education for pregnant teens and developing special programs for them as well, but and there is always a but... The pregnant teens in the school would be coddled, babied and over supported to the point that many other young girls saw this as an excellent venue for attention seeking. A girl would get pregnant by another boy in the school, they would break up and get back together (he would always be shoved to the side and often wanted not to be involved anyways) the friends would flock around the pregnant teen treating her like a princess and even teachers \ support staff would treat them with special care..... And when the baby came many months later, she would be away from school for a while and then bring the baby to the schools daycare (for a subsidized rate of course) and have the child as a show and tell item.

This whole setup perpetuates teen pregnancy at QECVI for generations and is a horrible horrible way for a child to grow up. Basically most of these children grow up with an immature mother, father shoved out of the picture, being raised by teenagers, raised in a welfare community and really getting second class living conditions.

If Teens want to have children, they should be acting like adults, unfortunately most adults are not adults until their late 30's. Schools and shows should not be "glorifying" teen pregnancy, just like they shouldn't be glorifying suicide like they are these days!

  • Personally, I believe that they do.

While these shows were originally intended to show the hardships of teen motherhood and discourage teenage pregnancy, and I believe they did well at first, they have started to get out of hand. Several of the girls who have been featured on the show have gotten pregnant again, which doesn't exactly show how well they prevent it again, and also so many of them have become fame-hungry. Several of them have tried to get their own show, are treated as celebrities, etc. They are not celebrities; they were girls on a reality show meant to discourage teens from having babies, and it's evident that they've lost this purpose. If many girls look up to the girls from 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, they might just follow in their footsteps. I also believe that having so many seasons of these shows is getting out of hand; a couple were good, but now it's getting just ridiculous and might cause young teens nowadays to purposely get pregnant just to be on TV.

  • It discourage teens

When you watch the show you see what they have to go threw as a teen and no teen should want to go threw it will be hard trying to finish school and take care of you and your child as a teen and you never know if the father is really going to be there for you and the baby threw hard times.

  • Most definitely not.

These shows show you how troubling it can be to be a teen mother. Teenagers already have to deal with school, family, relationships, and probably even work. To have a child on top of all that is very stressful. Some people may not want to hire a teen mother, or the teen’s school environment may change greatly. Teen mothers still in school may get bullied, and they’ll have more stress. Nobody would judge an adult with a child, but everyone may judge a teen mother.

  • Not even close to true

These moms go through hard times once a child is born. They are up every hour of the night having to feed, rock, and change the baby. There's no free time hardly during the day because of handling a baby or two. A lot of them are still living with parents, their baby father is nowhere in sight and 3/4's of them aren't even close to being done with high school. Who the heck would want to be a mom in high school? I certainly would not.

  • I do not think so

Personally, I believe that it shows how hard it is for one to be a teen and also be pregnant at the same time. There are already so many pressures that teens have these days. From school work, to being social, and getting enough sleep, yet still being active and being involved with their school as much as possible, I think that it makes teens second guess their life and if they are having protected sex because they love the person, not just for fun.

  • I believe they actually prevent it

According to CNN “In 2011, a total of 329,797 babies were born in the United States to girls between the ages of 15 and 19; that's a rate of 31.3 births per every 1,000 girls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC does not have rates available for 2012; Kearney and Levine say that number dropped to 29.4 per every 1,000 that year.” Also, “The show may actually encourage him or her to practice safer sex, according to a new study.”

I have done lots and lots of research and this is what i have concluded to, T.V shows like 16 and pregnant or teen mom do not encourage teens, actually discourages!

  • No they dont!

It's actually preventing teenagers from having sexual intercourse. It's showing them that they can't do things they would like to do, because they have to grow up sooner than they intended to. It's showing them all the responsibilities they will have to take care of and how being a grown up isn't all fun and games. You have to providefor your kids and thats not always easy.
