Yes, the Soviet Union would still be here today if Gorbachev was never its leader, because Gorbachev recognized the benefits of a free society. Gorbachev knew that a free economy is a rich one. Gorbachev knew that other countries had it better than they had it in the USSR. With Gorbachev open to progress, he was instrumental in transforming the area.
Even without Gorbachev, the Soviet Union was in an economic struggle and the
Western Bloc countries wanted to be independent countries. Reagan would also still try to negotiate with the Soviet Union even if Gorbachev never ruled. I feel that the Cold War would have ended but it might have ended later on in the late 90's or early 2000's
