If you know anything about history and religion's involvement within human history, you know it's an integral part of the history of human civilizations. I'm an atheist but I don't have anything against people believing in religion. It's actions that are most important. If you do, as some do, and justify your religion to preach and/or cause harm or think and/or encourage hatred than I don't agree with you. Any human who thinks of themselves with deserved exclusivity for any reason is a fool. Being religious doesn't make you better than anyone else, being an atheist doesn't make you better than anyone else, and being smart doesn't make you better than anyone else. For historical purposes, theology is very important. One would have a skewed opinion and view of the world without some understand of theology.
