  • North Korea underestimates the US military capabilities.

The fact that North Korea threatens anyone shows that they do in fact underestimate the United States. The United States is capable of wiping the entire planet off the map thirty times over, and therefore would have no problem wiping out North Korea. The North Koreans obviously do not know what they are up against.

  • Yes, they do.

North Korea does underestimate the US. The United States is a strong and very capable country that always proves themselves able to handle a wide variety of different situations. The U.S. has a strong and willing military that is always at the ready. It could result badly for them if they take any threats seriously.

  • North Korea is underestimating the commitment the United States has to the people of South Korea.

The government of North Korea has been allowed posture for so long, by so many different administrations, that they don't believe that the US will take military action against them. For the past 10 years, we have concentrated our diplomatic and military efforts in the Middle East with the results being that the countries of the Pacific Rim don't take us seriously.

Our response of sending F-22 fighters from Japan to South Korea is a step in the right direction, but we need to make a "clear and present" expression of our commitment to the stability of the region.

  • No North Korea is not underestimating the ability of the US to respond, they are posturing for political gain.

Without doubt the current leader of North Korea is aware of the United States' ability to launch a military strike against his country. His posturing and threats to use nuclear weapons are intended get the world's attention and to force the West offer economic aid as opposed to the use of force.

The more he gets international attention the more pressure that is put on the US to find a peaceful resolution the Korean issue.
