Closing Guantanamo was one of his primary goals when he first took office, however he never had the support of Congress.
Contrary to what many people think, he isn't a king.

  • Eventually

Obama has expressed his distaste for Guantanamo quite a while ago. It causes more problems than anything because it really does not solve anything. It's gotten him into a lot of trouble and can't be used effectively anymore. He realizes what goes on there and how it's hurting morale and thus the country.

  • Not necessarily.

Obama wants to do what's popular. If closing Guantanamo will make him more popular, and help the Democrats keep the White House, that's what he wants. Obama is a true politician, and will bend whichever way the wind is blowing day to day. It's how he got re-elected, and it's how he'll try to help his party.
