The reason that these horrible things were kept secret for so long was because of the threats that were put on the people involved. This, of course, was to save the reputation of the athletic department at Penn State. This is an ingrained problem, and the only way to get the idea across that this is extremely wrong is to punish the very department that they were trying to protect.
Penn State deserves the sanctions it has received. With several people, including the head coach, covering up child sexual assaults over a period of many years, the public has a right to know that this type of behavior will not be tolerated or allowed to go unpunished in any way. The 60 million dollar fine and being banned from the post season for four years is just right for a major college football program.
Of course Penn State football deserves sanctions. That entire program deserves to have the book thrown at them. What happened there was cruel and disgusting. It pathetic when people decide to do immoral things then try to cover it up for the sake of a sport. Joe Pa and everyone else associated with that are sick.
The NCAA is punishing an entire program for the actions of a few individuals. Those guilty of the crimes should be charged, and barred from college sports forever, but it's unfair to punish an entire university, including the students for their actions. Punish those who are guilty, and let the people who did nothing wrong build a better, clean program.
