Does rap music have an effect on today's society?

Asked by: Mherzer
  • Yes, but not all the rappers.

I want to explain this, but first let me say I'm not an racist.
Black Rappers (most of them) do music videos about being rich, having fast cars and sex.
They rap about money, cars, and b****es.
Those things are less important in life. You're not gonna be happy with it.
    If you take a look at Eminem, he's the first white rapper, and he raps about real stuff out there;
The Racism of rap, being broke and poor, how it feels when your life goes out of control, you're not alone, believe in yourself, and the backstabbing people that are on every step. There are many things I haven't counted...

Anyway, rap and music in general teaches us how to live, I see no bad influence.

  • In my opinion it does because a lot of these rap songs talk about very bad stuff

For example all of these rappers talk about very bad stuff in their songs such as sex, or drugs, or girls. Macklemore may be the only clean rapper in today's society for youth to listen to. Bad rappers such as Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and many others. It is not good for teens to listen to.

  • Just like all music

Rap music is part of popular culture. Popular culture by its very definition, means that it will have an effect on society, just like all popular culture. However, rap music seems to be having more negative effects (and if this is not the case, it has a greater potential to have a negative effect). This is purely to do with the themes of rap music these days, for example, drugs, sex, violence, objectifiaction of women (a lot of pop music does this) etc.
It also seems that a lot more people want to act "street" or "gangsta"

  • Rap music does have a (negative) effect on todays society.

Todays rap consists mainly of talking about money, cars, fighting, sex, drugs, and over sexualizing women such as calling them "hoes", "whores" or "sluts". Most of the rap "artists" out there have made some unfortunate decisions in their life. When people (mainly the youth) sees how these people are becoming so famous and "worshipped" they try to be like them and make negative decisions.

  • Most rap music is a bad influence on kids/teens

Most of the rap music kids listen to today contains no morals or values at all. It's mostly about f*****g hoes, b*****s, marijuana, etc. However, there are a few rappers who don't include that in their music... But most kids listen to the "famous" rappers, who are basically all criminals and really bad influences to society.

  • Yes, many popular rap artists have had influence on America's youth

All genres of music have their own good and bad, but because the question is about rap, I have to say it is appalling to see the kind of music America's youth enjoy. Many rap artists (but not all) send out terrible messages to young children who are easily influenced. Artists like Lil Wayne and others include themes like drugs, alcohol, sexuality, violence, and abuse. Music videos often portray these artists smoking marijuana and engaging in sexual behavior with women hardly wearing any clothes. Also, this kind of music is generally listened to people who are more likely to become violent, live in underprivileged families, have no morals and values, and commit violent crimes. So while not all music or all rap is bad, parents and communities should be encouraged to make sure this kind of music should not influence their children and their societies.

  • It defineatly does

Although some people say its bad its just all about perspective and how you look at it.If you see cuss words as inaproppiate then SOME rap is not for you because not all rap is because there is gospel rap.Classic rap and more not just "bad rap".Rap can only affect you if you let it but if you just enjoy listening to it for fun like me then it shouldn't have a negative effect or effect at all

  • Yes and no.

Of course some rap can be inappropriate and be a bad influence, but so has other music, such as rock n roll, metal, screamo, reggae, dubstep, and even pop music nowadays. So I don't think rap should be singled out. There is good and bad forms of all music in the past and today.

  • It shouldnt be banned

First of all, the government should have no right to censor extremely lyrics or violient content. Although this may look bad, this is just the way some people express theirselves. Yeah they may talk about drugs, and other bad stuff but they never say to go do all of this stuff. The problem is in the teens that hear the music, not the people that make the music. Most of the time the people that make all of these songs have no intention of making people do all the stuff that is stated in their songs. Adding on, just because a rapper or a composer says this kind of stuff such as drugs and sex, it doesn’t mean you should do it too. If a person jumps from a window would you do it. No right, so why would you follow people that talk about this stuff. It’s the peoples choice you are not forced to do this kind of stuff but you decide to do this. If the government censors this, mostly teens are going to protest by using more drugs and becoming very wild. This is one reason why teens do this bad stuff. Instead of doing good, the government would do more harm to the society of today

  • Rap is just a different type of music

And alot of times when people say that rap has negative influence its because they don't listen to it. When you think about it rap is like other kinds of music because it tells us as the audience a story though other types are more soothing and rap is to explicit all of these things are correct but I mean there are other types of music and if you hate rap music than don't listen to it listen to some other bs that you think is better then rap. It's not like there is only one type of music. SO quit complaining because almost all of society is listing to rap now a days.

  • Rap is good

Rap teaches us things and can help us feel like we can do anything. I listen to rap all the time clean and not clean bu the point of rap is the story behind it and if people don't think that then that is their opinion. But i truly beleive rap can help you
