Ted Haggard's fall from grace from having an illicit homosexual affair showed that even powerful Christian men have demons. Haggard, after he was fired from New Life Church in Colorado and the ministry's finances and attendance dropped. Currently, Haggard is trying to work his way back into prominence by holding "healing meetings" with former parishioners who are confused by Haggard's anti-gay beliefs even though he admited to being bisexual.
Ted Haggard's very public disgrace does not make him a more authentic messenger of the forgiveness of Jesus. Ted Haggard's public disgrace makes him look like a false messenger of the forgiveness of Jesus. Ted Haggard engaged in activities which can be considered very un-Christian like, and knowing that he participated in these activities while preaching the word of God makes him seem like a hypocrite or a fraud. The fact that he was given council and continued run a church only suggests that he was able to use forgiveness as a tool to minimize the damage he did to his reputation.
Ted Haggard, along with many other evangelical ministers who make a lot of money from their very public ministries, has done some very hypocritical things. It is not wrong to be married and find out you are gay, but to speak against it and do the actions and then to deny that the actions are part of your makeup is just too hypocritical to be healing.
If Jesus was a real living God we would have no way of knowing if Haggard's sins were forgiven, and it isn't really relevant. Haggard based his career on his words and his actions, preaching to tens of thousands about the sins of drugs, infidelity, and homosexuality. When he was caught engaging in these behaviors, all three at the same time, he showed the hypocracy of the church and the teachings in religion.
I do not believe Ted Haggard's public disgrace makes him a more authentic messenger for the forgiveness of Jesus. I don't understand why the Christian faith has so many pastors and preachers with spotty backgrounds and then people are suppose to follow their guide. To me, I think that illustrates their ability to backslide and then too many people attach themselves to these people and backslide with them. I think it is better for people to study and understand religion on their own.
