Just think how much better our lives would be if we stopped watching television and volunteered our time to a worthy cause. What would happen if we took our TV time and spent more of that time with our children? How much extra money could we make if we got paid to work another job as opposed to watching television? Yes, we would have much fuller lives without televisions!
A lot of people talk about how they have absolutely no free time or time to do various things, but then you end up finding out they watch television for hours each day. The television is taking away from various other activities, including face-to-face social contact, chitchat with family, hobbies, and things that really feed the brain, like reading a book. There are also people who eat as a family not around the kitchen table, but around the television. It's really changing the way we communicate, socialize, and spend our free time, and not for the better.
I believe that the television can do many great things for society, but only if used in moderation--like anything else. At the rate that people currently use television I think that it is simply a drain on their lives and taking away from living a full and entertaining life outside.
Today, too many people are attached in general to their screens of all sorts. Television is one of those, and it is especially blameworthy these days because of reality tv that is not really reality at all. It is the staging of those who hope to become celebrities and gives people an unreal feeling about what life is all about.
Television is a form of entertainment that is still fairly new. People are choosing to watch television at night to rewind and I see nothing wrong with that. If someone enjoys watching something on television they are having their own fun. Who said you have to do what other people do to enjoy life.
No, people do not spend too much time watching television, at the expense of living fuller lives, because television helps bring people together. Today, television is the thing that everyone has in common. Everyone knows what happened last night on that popular television shows. Television lets people watch current events in real time, and participate in society.
While I agree, that people spend too much time hooked on their phones and/or iPads, I don't think they are spending too much time watching TV. Nowadays, we have Tivo, DVR, and Netflix. We now can skip programs and commercials that we don't want to see. We don't have to wait for one program to be done in order to see the show that we really wanted to see. Sure, people will binge watch a season of a show, but they can now do that in a matter of hours, not days. If anything, people are spending too much on the internet or video games.
