First year dorm rooms: Do college students benefit from social environment of dorms?

  • Students need a social education, too

College is where many teenagers really find out about the world and each other. An intense social atmosphere is necessary to provide relief from intense study. Most college dorms have quiet floors or areas where serious students can study uninterrupted. While it may be important to get goods at college, sometimes the social life is where students get the best education and make valuable connections for life.

  • College Dorms Lack Sociability More Often Than Not

College dorms do increase sociability among students, but the effect is often exaggerated. Many college students use their dorm for sleeping and nothing else. They'll do their studying elsewhere and constantly be out of the dormitory for other reasons. With that in mind, the increase in sociability is barely noticeable for many students.
