Yes, the international community has an inadequate understanding of the conflicts in Africa, because they appreciate the suffering and poverty on the continent. Africa does not suffer for lack of understanding. Africa suffers because other countries do not have the power to come in and overthrow governments, even though they might be able to impose laws and property rights.
Instead, the real issue is how the international community deals with these problems; typically by favoring those with resources that can be taken and ignoring those with nothing to offer. Understanding the problems in Africa is not the problem, that has been understood for quite some time; as with middle eastern conflicts, the problem lies with those who intervene, not those who observe.
