Free trade: Does fair trade uphold principles of freedom?

  • Fair trade does uphold principles of freedom.

Fair trade does uphold principles of freedom. When people are being paid the wage that they deserve for all the work they put in to something, that is allowing them to be free from government intervention and allows them to live their life without having to rely on multiple sources for their income.

  • Fair trade is not freedom.

No. Fair trade is nothing more than a grassroots pressure group to conform business to business purchases to someone else's ideas of ethical standards. It's a mixture of protectionism and socialism that has very little if anything to do with freedom and free trade. The market should decide the prices, it should be a matter between seller and buyer only for maximum freedom.
