  • At 18 you can make your own choices

Research in neurobiology and developmental psychology has shown that the brain doesn't finish developing until the mid-20s, far later that was previously thought..However, despite the developmental differences between young and fully mature adults, criminal law draws a stark, scientifically indefensible line at 18...An estimated 247,000 people under 18 were tried as adults in 2007, and more than 5,000 adolescents are incarcerated in jails and prisons.

  • The law says 18!

Although I do not believe there is an exact age for officially becoming an adult that applies to everyone, the law in the United States makes that distinction for us and states that 18 is a legal adult. Today's young people need to be more aware of this and steps should be taken by parents and teachers to better prepare students for adulthood at 18 by teaching them responsibility for their own actions

  • You have to draw a line somewhere

If you can get married at 14-16 (in some states) and can get tried as an adult at 10, then 18 is a perfectly reasonable age to be considered an adult. All we need is to, as a country, align all of our adult privileges and responsibilities (handgun ownership, marriage / age of consent laws, car rental age limits, etc.) with this age.

  • 18 is still a Teenager

Being 18 years old may legally count you as an adult, however, at 18, a person does not have enough life experience to make informed, adult decisions. This is even true, medically speaking. I learned in a Psychology class in college that the frontal lobe of the brain is where we develop higher level thinking and gives us the ability to reason. This part of the brain does not fully develop until the ages of 19-22.

  • You need more experience!

You are not an adult just because you turn eighteen years old. You need to have more experiences, like working different jobs. At eighteen years old you are still not old enough to buy alcohol. Many eighteen year old people still live at home and need their parents to support them.
